President Obama, the business community, and labor leaders are all expected to begin a massive jobs push next year aimed at renovating and rebuilding the nation’s shabby infrastructure. But it won’t be another stimulus: The plan is to make it “budget neutral.” To do that, the feds want businesses to play a role by promising to help pay via user fees or another type of funding.

That is the question. Right now inflation might be too low compared to reducing unemployment. They are supposed to work in tension with each other. But inflation can be an extreme danger if it gets out of control. Unemployment is also extremely hard on the ones affected and also on the fortunes of elected officials. Because of the huge federal deficit, it is also not possible to have the government come up with simple spending vs. taxing decisions. Overspending has been maxed out and taxes are also seen as anti-stimulus to needed economic growth.

Only bipartisan solutions can help because the country has to become more optimistic and overcome gridlock and harsh negativism. Obama can succeed if he provides was is seen as constructive bipartisan leadership. He will be reelected unless Republicans can come up with a candidate who convinces the growing majority of independent voters that Republicans have presented a better alternative to Obama.

Republicans such as Huckabee, Romney, Palin, Gingrich, and so on, appear to be too polarizing to be able to provide the bipartisanship and compromise that the country will be increasingly looking for. On the other hand, if unemployment is still high, it will be difficult for Democrats to hold on to the Senate or presidency.
