Bo Obama's holiday basket.

Bo Obama's holiday basket.

Everyday probably is like Christmas for first pup Bo, but the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is making sure that the Obama's pet Portuguese water dog gets something special for the holiday. [See photos of first dog Bo Obama.]

Today, PETA tells us, they delivered a gift basked filled with goodies, all of which were made from non-animal natural ingredients. Among the goodies were vegan treats such as Booda Bones and sweet potato dog chews (as well as a harness, which PETA says is better than a collar when walking dogs).

"Our cruelty-free basket of gifts didn't cause harm to any animals, and we think that's how Bo would want it," says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. "Every day should be like Christmas for Bo and all the other dogs and cats who give us so much joy and unconditional love."

She also penned a note to the first lady, who once referred to Bo as her "son."

Dear Mrs. Obama:

On behalf of PETA and our more than 2 million members and supporters worldwide, happy holidays to you and your family, including your beautiful "son," Bo.

As animal rights advocates, we would be remiss if we didn't make sure that Bo got a gift basket from PETA headquarters here in Washington. The basket includes assorted vegan dog treats, a harness (which will make walks with Bo more comfortable for everyone), a penguin-shaped squeaky toy, and a copy of my book Let's Have a Dog Party!, which includes "promise coupons" for doggie outings and scratches behind the ears. Here's wishing everyone in your family a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Respectfully yours,

Ingrid E. Newkirk

Animal free treats for a dog.

Grow up Ingrid, dogs are carnivores and meat is a natural part of their diet in the wild. Perhaps she can take time off from her plans to run a pornographic website for the benefit of animals and instead, pursue and protest the meat eating animals in the wild.

How dare they kill to live!?

PETA is an organization of misfits with nothing further on their minds than to cause trouble and garner PR for their own promotion and purpose. They have almost NOTHING to do with LEGITIMATELY helping animals.

All I can say is the WH better share with the ASPCA.....this is not fair. They cannot in good conscience accept a gift that other pet owners wouldn't get.

Now stop that!

The girls better get ready to donate their gifts to the poor children...how ghastly that they would accept gifts from Santa when someone else couldn't have the very same thing.

"The main identifier of a cult is that it requires you to remove meat from your diet on the pretext that it is cleansing."

Huh?

Where did you get this crazy idea from? The above commenter is loonier than any I've heard in a long time.

Parental neglect is probably way more prevalent among meat-eaters than not. Would you say a steady diet of McDonald's and Coke is nuturing??

The above commenter is no doctor. If he/she really was one, God help us and stay as far away from this crackpot as possible
