Tweet Share on Facebook October 13, 2010 Comment (5)"In case of fire, run outside and yell, 'Fire, Fire, Fire!'" Those were the simple safety instructions posted inside the small hut where actor George Clooney and John Prendergast, the founder of the Enough Project, stayed during their travels in the Sudan. On his way back to the United States, Clooney says, he realized that the atrocities he saw and heard about in the warring nation were incendiary enough to want to run back and just yell "Fire, Fire, Fire!" stateside.

McChrystal's Rolling Stone Blunder Becomes an Army Case Study
Tweet Share on Facebook October 13, 2010 CommentThe Army hasn't swept Rolling Stone's damaging story about retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal, which got him fired, under the rug. Instead, it's become a case study on how to work with the media and keep the public's faith in the military system. In the new issue of the Army's Military Review, two officers cite the article in their piece on the Army ethic. They say, specifically, that officers must respect civilian control over the military and that the military must resist fighting with the press despite a sometimes hostile relationship. "Negative fallout based on the skewed perceptions from the Rolling Stone article has the potential to reverse significant progress made" between the press and Pentagon since the Vietnam War, the officers fret.

NFL Football Players Lobby Congress Ahead of Lockout
Tweet Share on Facebook October 12, 2010 Comment (2)We're barely into this pro football season and players are already looking to the start of the next one, hoping to avoid an income-losing owner lockout. In an aggressive bid to protect their interests and keep the game going next year, players are turning for help to an unfamiliar playing field: the halls of Congress. For months, they've been meeting with House and Senate members, emphasizing that a lockout would have far-reaching consequences. "This lockout is not just about players and owners. It's about fans, businesses, and people that work to support our game," says players' rep and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. "The players will stand up for what's right and continue to push for a fair deal for everyone," he tells Whispers.

A Gay Republican for President in 2012?
Tweet Share on Facebook October 8, 2010 Comment (15)Fred Karger, a Californian gay advocate who made a name for fighting to save Laguna Beach's famed gay club, the Boom Boom Room, plans to add a bit of spice to the 2012 GOP presidential race with his candidacy. His top issue is overturning the military's "don't ask, don't tell" rule. Krager wants to bring humor and optimism to the typically negative campaign trail (he plans to give a Frisbee to every New Hampshire household), and his platform stretches beyond gay rights: He is passionate about improving education, creating jobs, and reforming immigration. Karger says he was slow to warm to gay politics but now leads others in fighting for issues like homosexual marriage. "I'm probably the most radical gay activist we have," says the longtime Republican strategist, "even though I wear blue suits."

British Defense Cuts Spur U.S. Concerns
Tweet Share on Facebook October 7, 2010 Comment (1)If he were to make his famous midnight ride today, Paul Revere would have a slightly different spin: The British aren't coming! As London eyes massive 20 percent in military spending cuts and a huge slash in active Army troops, Washington is growing fearful that its best ally won't be able to fill gaps in the Pentagon's war plans. Worse, we hear that other nations might follow Britain in domino fashion unless the White House can convince 10 Downing Street to blunt the cuts.
