He wasn't an obvious pick for the post, which is why rumors quickly swirled around CIA Director Leon Panetta after he was sworn in on Friday the 13th, of February 2009. Chief among them was that the former House and White House budget chief was a short-timer, with little interest in spy games. But now, over 16 months later, he's being cheered by insiders as a major defender of the embattled agency and a champion of its workers.

His fans say Panetta, who just turned 72, is boosting morale by delving deep into the CIA's issues, while fending off efforts by other agencies to grab some of Langley's turf.
