Pollster John Zogby updates our weekly Obama Report Card with a grade on the president's performance. Zogby uses his polling, expert analysis, and interaction with major players to come up with a grade and some comments that capture how he sees the president's week ending.
John Zogby on Week 76:
"Waves from Hurricane Alex are disrupting the oil spill clean-up in the Gulf of Mexico. Sen. Robert Byrd's death is complicating the Democrats' efforts to pass a financial reform bill. But for our embattled president, that is relatively small stuff. Obama's good news is that the installation of Gen. David Petraeus to command troops in Afghanistan has been well-received. But in another bad sign for Obama's party in the midterm elections, our polling shows Democrats becoming more depressed about the economy and the nation's direction. Obama badly needs to rally the party base. His overall job approval rating holds steady in the high 40s, as voters seem to be saying Obama is dealing with more than anyone can handle. I'll agree and give him a C."
This week's grade: C
Last week's grade: D
