First lady Michelle Obama's veggie garden isn't the only part of her portfolio that's expanding. Her fitness-focused "Let's Move" campaign for kids this week linked up with the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. And we hear she's helping to promote the National Gardening Association's effort to bring gardens to schools.

NGA President Mike Metallo, who helped kids plant artichokes in Obama's 400-square-foot garden addition in the spring, says the first lady "obviously appreciates what we've accomplished" in getting kids to garden.

Like many Depression Kids, I worked with my dad & siblings to grow small animals & plants for food. We worked a half of two acres, with all kinds of vegetables, berries, olives, etc. It was fun to pick strawberries, when one isn't part of agribusiness, being rushed so it also brings backaches. I wish all kids had a chance to see where food comes from and to grow it. The First Lady sets a fine example, using the White House land for a garden. (A small version of Jefferson's & Geo. Washington's acres, altnough theirs were worked by slaves.) Her idea to have gardens at schools is excellent. My major project is regulating population, so there will be less demand to cover land with structures, roads, etc. to serve their needs. We get too much of our food from overseas now. We should be more self-sufficient that way. My father's hero was plant geneticist Luther Burbank who improved quality and yield. Burbank was also an atheist, who worked to make life better, instead of just praying about it.
