Republicans Prepare to Attack Obama for Oil Spill Response

With President Obama now facing his own Hurricane Katrina moment in the Gulf of Mexico, Republicans are relieved that for once the White House can't blame the disaster on the usual suspect: Former President Bush.

For now, the Republicans are united in backing the oil cleanup in the Gulf, but they are also readying an assault on the administration's handling of the crisis which some compare to former Bush's handling of Hurricane Katrina. "This is a disaster of epic proportions that the administration is not going to be able to blame George Bush for," said one GOP official.

Over the past few days, Republican leaders have been urging fellow lawmakers to ignore the urge to haul British Petroleum or administration officials to congressional hearings while the cleanup is going on. But in their comments, it is clear that the GOP is putting the administration on notice that they plan to dig deep into their handling of the crisis.

While the Coast Guard was dispatched quickly along with other administration officials, Republicans say the White House was slow to act and they want to know why. Sen. George LeMieux, a Florida Republican, is taking a lead on the issue for the GOP and said the top priority is to stop the spill. But he hinted broadly that the blame game will follow and be directed at the administration. "Right now is not the time to find fault with the administration for what they could have done or should have done," he said.

Fellow Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski also hinted at making the administration the eventual focus of a congressional probe. Noting that her state of Alaska knows something about oil spills, she said that the top issue is stopping the leak and cleaning up the mess, "not blame." But she also noted that it took the White House several days to determine that the BP spill was a disaster that required more attention to fix.

Republicans also want to press the administration on oil rig inspections. Some today cited statements from administration officials that both the BP oil rig and the failed emergency shut-off valve were inspected and given a stamp of approval two weeks before the spill.

LOOK FOLKS, I think from the bottom of my heart this was a bad act from a group of LOSER individuals. I also have had experience IN the oil fields and let me tell you there is way's of containing this. I for one HAVE several answers to this , but I would be killed for it by the loser groups. Plane and simple it COULD be contained. I KNOW HOW TO DO IT!!!! I am NOT an engineer, THANK GOD, because I wouldn't be standing around scratching my _ss with this. You say there is ice crystals? BIG DEAl!!! You say the water is very cold down 5000', I'm sure it is, but it's NOT FREEZING. Did you ever think the steel is a conductor of cold water/air. I work in the engineering field and we have used SEVERAL technics to stop the cold from forming barriers. IT CAN BE DONE IN THIS SITUATION TOO!!!!But it will cost you for ME to give you the solution. Engineering degree or not I KNOW how to fix this, but there hasn't been enough oil spilled to destroy us yet so they the scum bags aren't ready.

Oil spills happen, both naturally and otherwise. We know this, and we have known this for many years. But we still need to drive our cars to work, and make plastic, and heat our homes. No one is willing to give that up, no matter how many dead manatees make it onto the news. And so any reactionary measures are likely to cause more harm than good. The best we can do is minimize oil spills by imposing rigorous standards of procedure, multiple layers of oversight, and trying to reduce overall consumption of oil as much as possible.

Here's what we have to gain from getting out of oil (Middle Eastern or otherwise): (1) no more dependence on decadent dictatorships - we can't really go around preaching peace and freedom when we're forced to publicly make out with crime lords, opium barons, and people who consider themselves living gods; (2) significantly reduced greenhouse gas pollution; (3) we can stop getting ripped off by OPEC; (4) we can avoid coming tensions with Russia, Canada, and Greenland over access to Arctic oil deposits; (5) the exorbitant prices our citizens pay to meet their daily energy needs will no longer line the pockets of speculators, currency manipulators, and day-traders; (6) we will have incentives to develop new energy technologies, which we can then market to the rest of the world.
