The news media embed program begun at the start of the Iraq war has reached a new height in Afghanistan: Reporters and camera crews are traveling shoulder to shoulder with U.S. marines on the hunt for the Taliban. No less than Gen. James Conway, Marine Corps commandant, tells Whispers that the relationship is akin to that at Iwo Jima, when a photographer snapped the famous shot of marines fighting to plant the U.S. flag on Mount Suribachi. "I think it goes pretty well. I like the embed program because it gives a reporter who might not understand the culture an understanding of what these kids are going through day in and day out," says Conway. "I think it's probably as good as it's been in my experience."
