Nixon Manipulated From the Grave

I remember one of Richard Nixon's last predictions/concerns, also from 1994, that he deliberately made public in a New York Times front page article. As a bright, knowledgeable world observer even in his last days, he expressed grave concern that the Clinton Administration was not showing enough interest and support of the nascent democratic movement in Russia, and he predicted, that if the United States did not send in businesspeople, entrepreneurs and government officials and even financial aid to enable them establish a capitalistic model that could sustain the population and help them create jobs, and help show them how freedom worked, that Russia would fall back into the hands of another dictator. Nixon knew that a free market economy was a foreign concept to most (virtually all who had not traveled) Russians who had lived all their lives under one dictator after another, and that if Boris Yeltsin didn't begin to show how he could improve the lives of the average citizen, that the population would revert to the "comfort" a strong dictator. He said that Russia was beginning to fail, and that the US had been given a huge opportunity to turn an old enemy into a great ally, but that the window was closing on that opportunity. I will never forget that article as it struck such a nerve with me at the time.

The Clinton Administration did not heed the warning, Nixon was dead in a matter of weeks, and we know what has happened in Russia.
