There is nothing more annoying than a disgruntled animal "activist" sitting around late at night at his/her computer condemning the actions of individuals and/or organizations that are actually making real, positive changes on behalf of animals.

For someone to say that HSUS doesn't help animals because all or most of their money doesn't go toward "direct care" is as stupid as those in denial about global climate change who say after every time it snows: "So much for global warming... har har." Stupid, naive and completely missing the big picture.

As I mentioned in an earlier comment, I work at the HSUS. Direct animal care is one of many ways to help animals. Our organization tackles broader animal protection issues including puppy mills, dogfighting, factory farming, and animals used in research. Anyone with questions about the work that we do can see for themselves at humanesociety.org.

Horse owners must be responsible for their animals, and in fact the vast majority already use humane euthanasia for their old or ill horses. State anti-cruelty statutes address animal neglect or abandonment, and people who resort to these tactics should be prosecuted.

Interestingly, in California - where horse slaughter was banned in 1998 - there's been no corresponding rise in cruelty or neglect cases. Horse theft, however, dropped by 34 percent. In Illinois, when the horse slaughter plant was nonoperational for two years, incidents of horse neglect and abuse actually dropped.

If HSUS feels so strongly about horses and humane treatment then why don't they cough up some of those millions to actually help animals? It is sickening that a group that takes in over 100 million annually spends less than 6% on direct animal care. Yes HSUS lobbied to close slaughter houses knowing that many horses would suffer an even crueler fate when owners who could no longer care for them were left with no options. HSUS irresponsibly made NO preparations for alternative housing or care for horses that would be abandoned as a result of the closures. Yes they knew this would happen as it was widely discussed. Their Black Beauty Ranch was full and no arrangements were made to purchase another facility or to make more room for the overflow.

While it is disturbing to see healthy adoptable horses slaughtered for food I would rather see that than a slow cruel death from starvation or neglect. It least with slaughtering their death is not a waste and providing food is not a bad thing even if people in the US feel skimish about horsemeat.

As to the bubble head vapid stars that parade around with HSUS and PETA trying to close businesses and tell others how to live, they are easily dealt with and the public is moving this direction. I would never get my moral compass from people who act the way so many celebrities do. They are funny to watch but frankly no one wants to have a family member conduct themselves the way most of the film/music industry does.

It is time people stop listening to Whining Wayne he makes a great living off the backs of animals and does NOTHING about direct animal care. He intentionally diverts funds from local humane societies and indirectly is responsible for more animal suffering than the worst abuse case. I guess that is okay because according to Whining Wayne he has never felt a true bond with domestic animals the way most people do. Huh?! How he got that job is anyone's guess. Perhaps it is those mob connections. After all what better front for money laudering than a charity.

Get a real job Wayne!

Would those HSUS videos be produced like the ones from PETA, with paid employees who encourage and perpertrate the violence and abuse themselves? If abuse is so widespread why does it always take MONTHS and years to come up with 3 minutes of grainy video? Why are those videos held until a law is being proposed in the same state. PROPAGANDA, folks.

Are the celebrities going to buy the unwanted horses? Has anyone explained or shown them the vast numbers of abandoned horses that people can no longer afford to care for? Are they going to help pay for the euthanasia and the disposal of the carcasses of the horses? There are consequences for these actions. We need to think with our heads for a change.

Horses are the American Icon! We would not have 'settled' American without them. They deserve our respect. A nation is known by how they treat its animals. I urge everyone to support humane treatment of ALL animals...for we are animals too!

I work at the HSUS, and our organization has been a long-time advocate of responsible pet ownership. Check out http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/pets/.

It's a mistake to equate horse slaughter with humane euthanasia. There was a history of abuse and cruelty at the three U.S. slaughterhouses (now closed), including employees whipping horses in the face and horses giving birth on the killing floors. Undercover footage also showed conscious horses being shackled and hoised by a rear leg before having their throats cut.

USDA statistics show that 92 percent of all horses sent to slaughter arrive in "good" condition. These animals are healthy, sound, and could have productive lives ahead of them.

This is another effort by HSUS to take away Americans rights to own any type of animal be it horse, dog, cat, bird, reptile, etc. People do your research on the HSUS! This "animal rights" group is not out to help or save animals. It is out to take away our rights to own animals.

I do agree that animals should not be treated cruelly. However, there are enough laws out there to protect animals; the existing laws just need to be enforced.
