CIA Investigation Adds to Obama's Political Woes

Pollster John Zogby regularly updates our ObamaMeter. Each week, Zogby uses his polling, expert analysis, and interaction with major players to come up with a rating of between 1 and 100. The ObamaMeter, however, is not simply a poll-generated job approval number. Instead, the Washington Whispers ObamaMeter is Zogby's judgment on the performance of the president based on multiple factors.

"Another not so good week for the president. Augusts are generally a cruel month for presidents because no news only makes the press dig harder to find bad news. Going on vacation is a good idea because the president gets to reduce the heat. Still, there have been a number of left-right lightening rods during this administration but maybe none hotter than Attorney General Eric Holder's new appointment of a prosecutor to investigate CIA treatment of prisoners. If sores were already open, this act threatens to pour salt and vinegar on the wounds. Obama's initial message of healing rifts has been lost. But remember, and I've said this before, Obama was toast last August and won."

This week: Drops to 72.

Last week's rating: 73

Why did Obama pick this fight? Why the flip flop? I can't figure it out, unless he really is trying to distract from the healthcare debate. I guess he didn't think people could chew gum and tie their shoes at the same time.

This thing is going to blow up in their faces. Republicans needed to reinvigorate their anti-tax, strong national security credentials. They are getting a great assist from the Democrats, and especially Obama. Here is a list of issues where the Democrats are re-energizing their own brand with voters.

Democrats are tax-and-spend liberals. Well, they have confirmed the spending big time. Taxes are coming.

Democrats are weak on national security. What other conclusion can you get than that when you consider military cuts and the CIA investigations?

Democrats (especially Obama) does not view America as exceptional or noble. How else can you explain the Obama apology tour?

Democrats (especially Obama) love our enemies and hate our friends. Think about the criticism of Hugo Chavez of Venezuela (for example), and contrast that with Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu. No criticism for the former, plenty for the latter.

Democrats (and not Republicans) are idealogues who don't care about the middle class. The cap-and-trade legislation will have a dramatic effect on energy costs, and thus on family budgets that are already squeezed. Obama's answer - inflate your tires.

Layer on that the healthcare debate. My goodness, nationalize 1/6 of the US economy? Unless your IQ isn't above room temperature, how on earth can you cover 50 million more people and not spend any more money? You have to ration care. In simple terms, if you have a pie that doesn't magically change size, and if instead of six people eating it you increase the number to eight, the eight must get smaller slices than would the six. As the nation has learned to their regret, Obama saying it isn't so does't make it true.
