Bad for everyone. Young men who get kicked out of communities simply because there aren't enough females to own, girls who are raised to be raped and abused, women who don't even understand that it's wrong!

Taxpayers are stuck paying these communes/covens of illicit activities. These people claim to be self-sufficient; yet demand and use many benefits meant for law-biding citizens.

Two wives is the felony of bigamy. More wives is the same felony with more breeder females involved. I say it's domestic prostitution with one man being the Number One John. Inbreeding is known to increase genetic disease, so it's a public health issue. It must concern everyone. Before the Church banned it, polygamy enriched the church as unpaid wives and kids did work that created anything usable or sold. Their slave-driver was dear old dad. With his fly open and ready to go at any time, he was personally responsible for creating many pitiable but needy tax leeches.

Against or a supporter of polygamy???? Regardless of your personal opinion you support it and have been for many years thru your tax dollars. If a man has only one legal wife and as 5 more celestial marriages that resulted in 20 more children and they all receive welfare, food stamps and free medical care then your tax dollars are being directed into those households. Try and imagine the "head" of the household having all those welfare dollars coming in every month for years. It will come to thousands of dollars a month. Does that mean the children are well taken care of? Not necessarily as many of these women do not receive enough to proper;y care for their children...Try reading Jon Krakauer's book "Under the Bananer of Heaven" for a fast education.

I don't have a dog in this fight so I don't really care either way, but I have to wonder:

Why is it perfectly OK for a guy to have several girlfriends, have children with them, live with them etc . . . as long as they don't make a commitment through marriage?

Unfortunatley the LDS church has forgotten that it was a religious lynch mob that killed Joseph Smith. Now it seems determined to emulate that lynch mob when it comes to people who have different religious beliefs. This is not good for the Church or the country. It is fine to oppose gay marriage and believe that it is sin. I do. But it is not fine to merge religion and state. That way leads to the destruction of religion. The same goes for passing a religious law again polygomy. If the state wishs to be in the marriage business then any consenting adults who wish to marry should be allowed to do so in any combination.

It would seem that banning polygamy is a clear violation of the US constitutions ban against establishment of a religion as one of the worlds major religions the Moslems endorses it. It is certainly within western tradition as it was praticed by the Jew and may others. For that mater the term Greek love presents a tradition for the founding culture of western civilization that endorses homosexuality. We tend to glorify the Spartans as the saviors of Western civilization, but you couldn't make a movie that realisticly showed their social life.

Maybe it is time for the govt. to get out of marriage and enforce the laws we have. No underage marriages, period. Want to marry 6 women, then fine - but you cannot collect welfare for all those kids you sire to "get to heaven" or whatever reason. You cannot and never will STOP polygamy. Not possible. But you can sure rope in the abuses related to it by stopping the "single mother" status of all the subsequent wives after #1. Meaning, no dad on birth certificate, no benefits. Oh, there is a dad? state goes after him. No birth certificate, no benefits. Mom is 15? Prosecute the dad. Give it up for adoption if you can't raise the kid. The 1 man-1 woman argument is not going to address this problem. Let consenting adults marry - who cares. But then let each religious institution say who they will perform a service for. I don't recall marriage in the constitution and fail to see any federal reason for their having gotten into it to begin with. Let the govt. do civil unions for taxes and benefits, leave marriage to the churches. But that's just my thought on the subject.

If we have gay marriage under an equal rights argument, plural marriage should also be legal. Why should polygamists and polyandrists be denied the same rights as other people?

I suppose conservatives will want to pass a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between two gays, lesbians, or heterosexuals.

We're a diverse nation now, and to deny African and Moslem immigrants plural marriage is racist.

Marrying anyone to another person or thing against their will is immoral and incorrect.

Legislating morality is a indevor that will bite any politician in the ass.

If you think that something is not correct then state your opinion and leave it at that. If you (Reid) think that marrying girls at an age that is that is to young and you feel that you have to pass laws to fullfill your Constituional duties then do so and I can abide that ( I think that marrying before 18 is to young anyway).

But you have no right to interfer with my right to enter into a contract, and that is just what marriage is. If you think that marriage is a function of heaven then why are you (RIED) not asking god what HE thinks on the subject

Jonathan Hammmon of AZ 4:42PM April 16, 2009

Plural marriage goes against all moral & legal stance of Western civilization. It's illegal & wrong. Feel free to point your finger at them & call them criminals because they're hoping you don't. For those who don't understand that there really are cultural differences in the world I suggest education. However, in this case it is an abberation borne out of a mistake over a century ago on our soil. All parallel societies really do need to be stamped out. There is only one culture in the U.S., diverse though it may be, it does not include "anything goes". There are fences & limits in our society for a reason.
