"Michelle Obama set the spade into motion last week, breaking ground for an organic vegetable garden right on the White House's South Lawn. The first lady's initiative set off a groundswell of interest in home gardens" by Laura Mclean New blog on the Hx. of the Ladybug: http://historyoftheladybug.blogspot.com/

RE your hateful remark about our FIRST LADY - GROW UP.

George Washington kept bees. If we can make a beekeeper out of the present president, then there will be hope for the planet.

George Washington was a very progressive farmer. He made his own bricks and paints.

If America wants to survive its own folly, it needs to get it touch with basic reality, and bees and gardens are right there. We all need to eat.

I wish for Charlie Brandts and the Obamas a grand honey flow, no pesticides and many fulfilling hours enjoying both the bees and the fruits of their labor.

Be Fruitful and Replenish the Earth!

Cheers,

John Smith and Pocahontas

Please to refer to W and bubba by their proper names. "President" would be nice.

They have paid their dues.

They paid their dues and ours

I am a hobbyist beekeeper and I beleive there needs to be more backyard beekeepers. Especially since the arise of CCD (Colony Collapse Disorder. However, does any single individual actually believe that this first woman (I refuse to call her a lady) is actually going to tend this garden. Please, at least some hardworking gardner will get a good job on the whitehouse lawn.

I have been a gardner for more that 50 years. So I was delighted

with the idea of a garden on the White House grounds. I have a couple of suggestions: 1) Your berries should be planted in a separate plot allowing pumpkins and acorn squash to be planted at the base of the berry bed. You don't want your gardening space being over run by the sprawling vines. 2) Praying mantis can easily be introduced and they love garden pests like flies, mosquitoes, and grasshoppers. 3) Bring in some lady bugs to serve as another form of "green pesticides". The presence of these "good bugs" will provide for great learning experiences too. The pumpkins and squash will extend your harvest into October. Oh, don't forget to start a compost now.
