The No. 3 House Republican, Indiana's Mike Pence, describes himself this way on his Internet site: "A Christian, a conservative, and a Republican, in that order." So it shouldn't be too surprising that before plunging into GOP politics on many mornings, he gathers his staff for a little prayer—a practice he repeats at day's end. "Congressman Pence and his staff often pray for our country and for wisdom in serving the American people," says spokesman Matt Lloyd. "We pray for colleagues in Congress, the president, and other leaders of this country. Sometimes, we even pray for the press."

Actually this country was founded, by and large, by men who felt Christianity was useful tool to keep the loutish masses in line but was not suitable for educated, rational people. More than half of the founding fathers were doubters or Deists. Many of them accepted the possibility of one, unifying force in the universe and that was about it. All you need to do is read their letters and diaries and journals to see this. But why bother to read anything that might challenge the beliefs you had pounded into you as a child, when you were too young and defenseless to protect yourself from an onslaught of indoctrination?

As a resident of Indiana, I am thankful and proud of our congressman, Mike Pence. He represents a large number of people who share his strong belief in God and the power of prayer. It is time we all are returning to the values that have made this country strong and prosperous.

As a leader, the Congressman is modeling the type of behavior that we should expect of all of our leaders. A daily prayer to the Lord for seeking direction; there is no better way to start each day. I hope that this catches on with other leaders, on both sides of the aisle, as well as many more of the citizens of our nation.
