The maverick in Senator McCain is really the madman. Selecting this VP Pick shows me very clearly that it is all about McCain, McCain First NOT Country First.

How insulting to all of us that Senator McCain wants us to view Sarah Palin as the most qualified pick for VP.. I would not want her as President of my country, the United States of America and shudder to imagine Sarah Palin taking that 3:00am call or any call in the White House.

Senator McCain could have won this election if he thought of Country First rather than McCain first. This dangerous decision on his part during the most volatile times tells me and my entire family that he is not fit to be President.

In my very large family we have been registered Republicans until NOW. We are voting for Senator Obama for President and pray that he wins.

By the way Senator John McCain Lost about 70 votes from our family!!!!!!

Dr James,

You are correct about a road (the forerunner of the Trans Alaska Highway) in Alaska being built during WWII, but it was built to counter the perceived threat of a Japanese invasion of mainland Alaska after they landed a small force on two tiny islands in the Aleutians, Kiska and Attu, I believe, as a diversion to their larger plan for taking Midway Island. The Russians were fighting the Germans during WWI and as such were on the same side as us (as they were in WWII) although they dropped out of the war (WWI) when the czar was overthrown in 1917. Yes, the Russians, and previously the Soviet Union, routinely test our response by flying into or close to the US airspace around Alaska, but this has never been perceived as the precursor to something larger, much as we and our allies routinely test Russian airspace. (Thankfully, Governor Sarah standing in her backyard, while getting a nice per diem, and shaking her fist at these planes seems to be enough to discourage them.) Anyone who thinks that a land invasion by Russia of Alaska is a possibility has read one Tom Clancy book too many.

Sandyshores,

Listen to the drivel that comes out of Governor Palin's mouth every time she opens it. If the things she says actually make sense to you, you must be a citizen of Bizzaroworld and not the US. When talking in circles and or offering shallow, glib and altogether meaningless comments about the issues of our time are sufficient for you to sit back and say to yourself, "She's got a good grasp of what is going on!" I don't know what to say.

As for the state of our economy, when Bush took office, from President Bill Clinton (D), he inherited a budget surplus of a couple of hundred billion dollars. With Bush, and a Republican controlled congress through 2006 (ending January 2007), we now have, by far, the largest deficit in our nation's history. As to the proposed $700 billion bailout - this came from President Bush, the fiscal conservative, not the Democrats. Bush's policy of tax breaks for everyone, especially the wealthy, while paying for them and adding to our deficit by borrowing more and more money from China, has given us what we have today - along with the Republican policy of trashing any oversight or regulation of corporations, generally and the financial industry, in particular. If you want to vote McCain/Palin (Palin/McCain?) at least do so for some reason that makes sense, like "I just like her".

Sarah won over Alaskans in the same way I see her winning over the rest of America. People here used the same types of arguments when she ran for Governor - no experience except as Mayor of a small Alaskan town, pretty, too religiously radical, etc, etc.

She has had the highest approval rating of any governor - not just in Alaska but across the US. She is smart, savvy and understands "middle" America. She has really cleaned up government, been a strong advocate for doing things "right" and she deserves more than some of the loose comments suggest.

No one talks about that you have to drive through Canada to get from one part of Alaska (SE) to the other. Alaska has to deal with Russia, Canada, and Pacific Rim countries all the time with our fishing. We have several consulates in our state because there is a lot of foreign investment here. Alaska was the only part of the US soil ever occupied during WWII. Yes, we are the first line of defense for America and at greater risk than perhaps the Mississippi Delta region.

How many other VP candidates have had foreign or executive experience? Most learn on the job - that goes for Presidents too. They can't know everything about every subject - they have to hire the best and listen to their advice. They have to be smart. They have to know how to make a decision. They have to have a strong moral compass.

These are traits we look for rather than specific knowledge on a particular subject. Who knows what issues will come up in the next 4 or 8 years? It is better to elect someone for their solid qualities.

McCain has EARNED his right to be elected President and don't underestimate Sarah's capabilities.

Governor Palin is so far out of her depth that any continued support of her as the best possible Republican VP pick (for our country - not the McCain campaign) is just ludicrous! As Hitler figured out early in his political career, sometimes the biggest lies are the easiest to put over on (some) people.

Look around yourself - in your neighborhood, at work, at the grocery store or mall and just pick anyone, oh wait, it has to be a women, and substitute her for Sarah Palin. Take your Aunt Minnie and put her on the ticket - so long as she plays well to some sub group of the population. This only shows how much of a lie the "Country First" slogan of the Republicans is. McCain will do anything to win and has gone back to the same well of ill or under-informed voters that put our current president (the worst in the history of our country) into office twice! The fact that anyone still supporting McCain can even keep a straight face when talking about the knowledge, abilities and experience of Palin shows the disdain they have for the American voter and our country. When you have a bad "product", but can't do anything to correct it, all you have left is to sell it that much harder.

It is probably too late to expect those who can't see clearly to come around before the election. I can only pray that there aren't enough of these people to decide the election in favor of McCain / Palin. God help us when intelligence, new ideas and hope take a back seat to stupidity, more of the same and fear.

let's have the real truth you owe that much to the voters

I love Sarah and I am sick of the berating of her character. I look at the Democrats and this almost trillion dollar mess they have made out of the USA. It’s all spending to no end and even after this trillion dollar mess the democrats have given us. They some mistaken notion that the whole country now poorer then ever because of their Fannies mea antics, think! We can all afford this new life they have mapped out for us in their no oil world. How dare they put this woman down as a criminal when she was doing the right thing.

The democrats cannot see the fact that we cannot all afford new cars, heating systems, infrastructures or anything we can’t even build this stuff without oil let alone get to work without it.

It is beyond foolishness after the democrats have spent us to death to think we can swallow their magical pill. DOWN with democrats up with republicans, we do need change and it’s not the democrats we’ve had more then enough of you running the USA into the ground.

the alaskan roadway was built in wwII to help defend agsinst a russian invasion during wwI and afterwards.

to say the threat isnt real is absurd.

whether its by plane, or ship over or thru alska. if russia wanted to invade this oil rich area it would bea ble to do so long before the mainland usa could react.

ALASKA IS THE FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE AGAINST RUSSIA. ans has been for a hundred years

Our world bank president stated at the Geneva Conference in 2004."The war in the 20th century is over oil,the 21st century will be a war of water, and will make the oil wars look like childs play.".I have put forth my effort 110% to recognize this matter.I only seek the best interest of our country.I do have democratic voting history. But,I beleive the media does not make that decision for me.just watching SNL,and TINA FAY does a great impresion of you.You should ignore the press.and inform them that ALASKA was bought@ 1cent an acre by a sole investor. You are a chosen candidate by the republican party.which should be an honor for you.and the State of Alaska.I think the media treats you unfairly as a woman. You have earned this.I may not vote for your party, but respect your accolades.
