Obama Powell should be the ticket but not for novelty reasons.

With only 3000 characters to comment, I would not be able to finish a narrative on why this ticket works. So I'll make a few points until I run out of space.

1. Powell is a Republican and could bring moderate (R) endorsements.

2. World respect for Powell even after his mistakes in Bush admin.

3. Mission focus. CP priority = the Middle East. No one is smarter or more respected on the subject.

4. One term. I do not believe CP has aspirations for the presidency. Term II would be time for Clinton or another who would be next Pres.

5. He'll bring money f/mid and center.

6. Respected by Defense & State Dept.

7. Proves bipartisanship.

8. Isolates age issue (same age as McCain).

9. Isolates race. CP is proven loyal to country, not an unknown like Sen. Obama

10."THERE WILL BE NO (R) VP CONTENDER". No one McCain might pick can compare to CP.

11. Cabinet level experience.

12. Military expert. Not even McCain measures up.

13. Can do "if needed". No doubt can be Pres.

14. Sends message to far left and far right (serious about bi-partisanship & Country before Party).

15. Shows courage (Obama and CP).

16. Republicans make history (1st Black VP).

17. Shows (R) are sincere about including (respecting) minorities.

18. Sends message to the world that U.S is militarily strong and ready.

19. Atonement (and accepting responsibility). Powell can campaign on the wrong he did in the Bush admin and his desire to correct it.

20. Rebuttal to any McCain policy on war.

21. Proven leader and dependable aid.

22. Bipartisan. Not just the appearance of inclusion, but actually considering and consulting moderates and conservatives.

23. Delivers the State of Virginia, probably secures Colorado and New Mexico, helps in Florida and Pennsylvania..

24. Delivers Israel. Powell is known loved and respected by Israel and U.S. Jews.

25. Obama Powell would be the capstone of the smartest, most intelligent, most enlightened, best educated administration in recent history. Only the brain thrust of such an administration can address the current and future challenges of our country. Knowledge of world history, U.S. history, military history, current affairs (national and international) without the arrogance of supposed military, social/cultural and business superiority is essential for the U.S to avoid the fate of other imperial dynasties such as Rome, Great Brittan and Mesopotamia.

I'll stop here (but I got more).

not a chance in hell

If the republicans are going to attack the ticket based on military and foreign affairs experience, Colin Powell negates their position. Military General, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, former Secretary of State....WOW!

As for the All-African-American ticket....WOW! again.

I hope Obama asks and Powell accepts, then we'll finally have a White House that makes sense...no PUN intended.

No one in history ever squandered their political capital the way that Colin Powell did.

Back when Bill Clinton was running for president, there was talk of putting Powell on the Democratic ticket, as he had yet to declare his party affiliation. Powell's popularity was through the roof, something like 80% if I remember correctly, and there was even talk of him as the Republican presidential nominee. He had unprecedented political options and unparalleled support across the political spectrum.

He chose to hitch his wagon to W. and willingly waltzed into Bush's hornet nest of neo-cons for the chance to be Secretary of State. Why not Secretary of Defense? Clearly, as the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he was tailor-made for that position, but instead opted for State. Whatever his reasons, it was the worst case of political over-reach I've ever seen (with the notable exception of Bush posing as a president). After his choice to knowingly give a potentially false speech to the U.N. in the run-up to the war, I witnessed the most precipitous fall of any political figure in my lifetime.

Had Powell come out publicly with the concerns he evidently was expressing privately, he could have effectively forstalled any attempt by the Bush administration to ram the war down our throats. Instead, he took the more politically advantageous route at the time, and now that the truth is out, he is branded forever as a moral coward, just another political game player, incapable of true leadership and deserving of his place in the trash bin of political shame.

If Obama has any sense, he'll tell Mr. Powell, "Thanks for your endorsement, but no thanks. Do me a favor and keep your mouth shut." As for including him on the ticket? You must be joking.

I think it would be very tempting for Powell to come back as VP or Secretary of State, and a smart move for Obama. Give the man a chance to undo his former colleagues' mistakes in Iraq. More centrist positioning. Sounds smart to me.

However, I can't see a dream cabinet pulling any current Democratic senators from the Senate. The goal is a cloture-forcing majority.

To "Powel for Veep" in WI - I agree with most of what you say - except please be aware it's not 5,000 more Americans who would be alive, but 1.2 MILLION IRAQUIS! Most of them were civlians! We invaded a sovereign state. Listen to the testimonies on Memorial Day at Congress from the Vets - tales of women screaming at the US Soldiers "You are Worse than Hussain!" as their babies lay dying in their arms! We have soooo much blood on our hands -- all of us! It's in our gas tanks and in our corrupted internal infrastructures - with BILLIONS and BILLIONS having been spent and a MILLION having been now killed! All for a NOT secret agenda, published by the GOP in the 90s, and prompted by the Neo Cons! How blind and stupid they've played us - and how blind and stupid the commercial media allowed us to be!
