A Yawn Wakens Conspiracists

May 2, 2008 RSS Feed Print

When something happens once or twice, is it a pattern? It is in the world of political blogging, especially when the target is Sen. Hillary Clinton. A while back, while dissing a book critical of Clinton, her spokesman Philippe Reines sneered: "Is it possible to be quoted yawning?" When a pro-Clinton interest group spokesman used a near-identical quote, some bloggers noted it, suggesting a violation of laws barring campaigns from coordinating with so-called 527 groups. "I have a hard enough time coordinating my suits and ties, let alone multiple organizations," says Reines. "I am fashion-savvy enough to know that prison stripes aren't very flattering. So while imitation is considered the sincerest form of flattery, I hope the next time, he prefaces the patented yawn line with, 'Can I be quoted quoting someone else?' "
