What Makes America Special (Or Used To)

MSNBC invited me to be a panelist recently on the Melissa Harris-Perry show, where we discussed American exceptionalism—the idea that the United States is a unique nation with a special role to play in the world. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has campaigned on this theme, while accusing his opponent, President Obama, of undermining American exceptionalism.
