Tweet Share on Facebook November 28, 2007 Comment (20)A day after Palestinian and Israeli leaders agreed in Annapolis to resume peace talks, President Bush will bring together Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas today at the White House. Bush will meet with each leader separately initially and then later this afternoon bring them together to formally announce that the first direct negotiations in years have begun.
Pervez Musharraf stepped down as Pakistan's military commander today, one day before he is to be sworn in as the civilian president. While welcoming the move, opposition leader Benazir Bhutto said she still did not accept him as the country's top leader.
O. J. Simpson and two of his coconspirators in the Las Vegas sports memorabilia alleged heist are due in a Nevada court today. The three men are facing kidnapping and armed robbery charges, and the 4
-day nationally televised preliminary hearing will give Americans a glimpse at what kinds of evidence will be brought against Simpson and the other two. -

Tweet Share on Facebook November 27, 2007 CommentPresident Bush's Mideast peace conference will begin today in Annapolis, Md., where top officials from more than 40 countries will try to broker a deal for peace between the Israelis and Palestinians.
Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor died this morning after being shot by what police believe was an intruder. The 24-year-old NFL player was at his home in Miami when a prowler broke through the bedroom door and fired two shots at the player and his girlfriend, missing once. His girlfriend escaped unscathed, along with Taylor's daughter, who was also in the house.
Vice President Cheney is expected to be back at work today after doctors yesterday administered an electric shock to his heart, restoring it to its normal rhythm. Doctors discovered the problem—atrial fibrillation—on Monday, and Cheney was seen in the evening at George Washington University Hospital. He has had a history of heart troubles and procedures including four heart attacks, quadruple bypass surgery, and two artery-clearing angioplasties. He has also had a defibrillator, which monitors his heartbeat, implanted and then replaced in his chest.

Trent Lott, the minority whip, will resign to pursue "other opportunities." He was elected to his fourth term in 2006 and became whip, considered redemption for having to step down as the party's majority leader after making comments commending Sen. Strom Thurmond. His remarks made it look as though Lott supported Thurmond's previous pro-segregation policies.
Firefighters made progress today against the second wildfire this year to singe Malibu. Dozens of homes were destroyed in the Southern California blaze. Firefighters believe the fire was started by humans but are still investigating the possibility that it was set intentionally.
President Bush is preparing for tomorrow's Mideast gathering in Annapolis, Md., by inviting Israeli and Palestinian leaders to separate meetings at the White House. Bush is hoping to broker a Middle East peace deal.
