Dianne Feinstein and Chuck Schumer, both of whom serve on the committee, Mukasey's nomination is now expected to advance to the Senate. If so, a confirmation vote before the full Senate will likely follow later this month.
Hollywood writers began striking yesterday following failed negotiations with producers, many popular TV shows were forced into reruns. At least two late-night comedy acts, The Late Show With David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, aired repeats in the absence of writers for new material. The hosts of ABC's Monday night hit show Dancing With the Stars were told to improvise their lines.
Dissent and violence are growing in the streets of Pakistan following President Pervez Musharraf's decision over the weekend to adopt emergency rule. On Monday, lawyers in the city of Multan were involved in a violent confrontation with police; at least three lawyers were seriously wounded. The country's deposed chief justice this morning called on lawyers to continue their defiance.
