While thousands of homes are still threatened by the Southern California wildfires, firefighters assaulted the blazes from the sky and have made some progress. The weather has also cooperated, as the harsh and hot Santa Ana winds—in part to blame for the fires—have calmed.

A high-level Iraqi delegation is planning to visit Turkey today. Turkey's president said his country will no longer tolerate the use of Iraqi soil for the purpose of launching terrorist activities. This comes after Kurdish rebels killed 12 Turkish soldiers on Sunday near Turkey's shared border with Iraq.

Software company Microsoft beat out Internet giant Google for a piece of Facebook. Microsoft will invest $240 million for a 1.6 percent stake in the three-year-old popular social networking website.
