Tweet Share on Facebook September 6, 2007 CommentOpera star Luciano Pavarotti died this morning. The famous tenor had been diagnosed last year with pancreatic cancer and passed away at his home in Modena, Italy, surrounded by his wife, four daughters, sister, and other family members. He was 71.
And he's in. Former Tennessee senator and Law &Order actor Fred Thompson announced his candidacy for the presidency last night on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He also uploaded a video on his website and YouTube giving his reasons for seeking the White House.
The other eight GOP candidates took to the stage at the University of New Hampshire last night, where Rep. Ron Paul, the lone antiwar candidate, sparred with the others on Iraq. The Republicans also poked fun at Thompson for skipping the debate in order to announce on Leno. "Maybe we're up past his bedtime," kidded Sen. John McCain.

That delicious scent of butter wafting from your microwave bag of popcorn could potentially give you lung disease, doctors are warning. They have found what they believe to be is the first case of a consumer suffering from "popcorn lung" after inhaling fumes from microwaving several bags of popcorn every day for years. The potentially fatal disease has been the subject of lawsuits brought by hundreds of workers in food factories who were exposed to chemicals used for flavoring the snack food.
Republican Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho is reconsidering his decision to resign if he can clear his name with the Senate ethics panel and a Minnesota court. Over the weekend, he said it was his "intent" to give up his seat at the end of September after news outlets broke the story of his Minneapolis airport bathroom arrest and guilty plea stemming from allegedly lewd conduct with a male police officer.

First, there will be a whole lot of chatter on Iraq. The House and Senate are holding hearings tomorrow and Thursday on Iraq's problematic political situation and security forces. Gen. David Petraeus is to give his long-awaited report next Monday.

Tweet Share on Facebook September 4, 2007 Comment (1)The Chinese government today denied that it hacked into the Pentagon's computers in June, responding to an article in the Financial Times yesterday. The newspaper reported that the People's Liberation Army hacked into a computer system in the office of Defense Secretary Robert Gates and that Americans had to take down the network for more than a week. Chinese officials said they were opposed to all criminal activities undermining computer networks.
Sorry, North Korea, says the United States, but you still sponsor terrorism. North Korea's Foreign Ministry said yesterday that the United States had taken it off the list of countries that sponsor terrorism. Today, Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill denied this claim and suggested that North Korea would have to go further in dismantling its nuclear program before it could get rid of this designation.
The second Category 5 storm of the hurricane season slammed the Nicaragua-Honduras border this morning. Communication to the area has been cut off.
