Every American remembers 9/11, but not every presidential candidate's online team does. Scouring the presidential candidates' websites today, U.S. News found that more Democratic candidates put up online tributes than did their Republican counterparts Of the Democrats, only former Sen. Mike Gravel didn't post some sort of commemorating message on his website.
On the GOP side, the candidates whose websites paid tribute to the day of mourning were former Govs. Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who has been criticized for allegedly exploiting 9/11. Giuliani's website quoted from a speech the former mayor delivered soon after Sept. 11, 2001, to the United Nations and included a link to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum website.
Among the presidential campaigns thus far, the Republican candidates have typically trailed the Democrats in innovative use of the Web. Fred Thompson's entrance into the campaign was supposed to give the Republicans a boost on that end, but the actor-lawyer also neglected to mention September 11 on his home page, instead featuring his 15-minute announcement of his bid for the presidency (originally posted last week).
