A Brazilian airliner slid off a slick runway, bounced over a major highway, and then crashed into a gas station, killing almost 200. The plane’s pilot was apparently trying to take off again after failing to land the Airbus 320 properly on a runway that has been repeatedly criticized for being too short. Two other planes skidded off the runway because of rainy weather the day before, but no one was hurt in either event.

Senate Democrats held a slumber party trying to encourage Republican colleagues to change their minds on Iraq. In preparing for all-night debate on the future of the war, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had cots brought in for sleepy senators. While some senators snoozed, others gave floor speeches as Tuesday turned into Wednesday. Even with little to no shut-eye, Republicans remained steadfast in their opposition to antiwar legislation proposed by the Democrats.

After being plagued by ailments brought on by their work at ground zero, 9/11 rescue workers have sued the company overseeing a $1 billion September 11 insurance fund set up by Congress to deal with 9/11-related healthcare claims. September 11 rescue workers were recently in the news after appearing in Michael Moore’s documentary Sicko on the U.S. healthcare industry. In the film, workers and Moore tried going to Guantánamo Bay for the same free healthcare that the terrorist suspects received. U.S. News also recently reported on other issues affecting those personally touched by 9/11.
