Former White House counsel Harriet Miers played hooky on Thursday when she decided to follow President Bush’s advice and not testify before the House Judiciary Committee. This move may get her hauled into court as committee members took the first steps to hold Miers in contempt of Congress. Miers was subpoenaed to answer questions before the committee on the firings of U.S. attorneys. But the president has claimed executive privilege so that top White House aides can escape testimony.
The tallest man in the world got married Thursday to a woman he hovers more than 2 feet over. The groom, Bao Xishun of Inner Mongolia, is 7 foot 9 and made headlines in December after saving two dolphins. He used his long arms to pull plastic out of their stomachs.
It went from bad to worse this week for Sen. John McCain’s struggling bid for the presidency. Once thought to be the No. 1 Republican contender, McCain lost campaign manager Terry Nelson and strategist John Weaver earlier this week. Two others jumped ship Thursday--Ed Failor Jr. and Karen Slifka, who were both veteran Republican strategists in the early-primary state of Iowa. Then his Florida campaign’s cocchair state Rep. Bob Allen was arrested for allegedly offering to perform oral sex on an undercover police officer for $20. McCain will give a speech in New Hampshire today on Iraq, where he has vehemently defended President Bush’s plan for the “surge.” However, according to a new status report, the surge strategy, which was to improve situations in the unstable country by September, may take much longer.
