Collar-Bomb Victim Was In on Original Crime

In 2003, Brian Wells robbed a PNC bank in Erie, Pa., and then was blown up by a device bolted to his neck. Investigators examined the case for four years and today announced the fruits of their labor.

Wells was in on it.

In another bizarre twist to a plot that already resembles a Hollywood hit, U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan said that Wells helped plan the robbery, in which a bomb was clamped to his neck, but investigators are not sure how much he knew about the device.

Two coconspirators, Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong and Kenneth E. Barnes, were indicted in the case today and apparently had more knowledge of the plot.

“Sadly, the plans of these other individuals were much more sinister, and [Wells] died as a result,” Buchanan said.

Diehl-Armstrong is already serving time in prison for murdering her former boyfriend, apparently to hush him up as she planned this robbery, authorities said.
