Democrats in both chambers of Congress are promising to continue pushing for legislation that would free more federal money for stem cell research, perhaps using the appropriations process, after President Bush vetoed a similar measure yesterday. It was only the third veto of his term and the second on this issue.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will meet next week to discuss the recent routing of Abbas's Fatah party by the more radical Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

 The top U.S. nuclear envoy made a rare visit to North Korea Thursday, ahead of expected six-nation disarmament talks next month.

Japan has decided to change the name of Iwo Jima, the site of one of the bloodiest battles — and one of the most famous photographs — in World War II. The island will now be called Iwo To, the original, prewar name.

Italy's National Research Council has found trace amounts of cocaine and cannabis in the air in Rome.
