- British Prime Minister Tony Blair has announced that he is stepping down as head of the Labour Party, the first stage in resigning as prime minister once a new leader is selected next month.
- Meanwhile, in a victory for the old way of life in Britain, the European Union has dropped its demands that Britain adopt the metric system.
- The public spat between GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney and the Rev. Al Sharpton dragged on yesterday, after Sharpton said that "those that really believe in God" will not vote for the Mormon former governor from Massachusetts. Romney called the comment "bigotry."
- Former Alabama state trooper James Bonard has been indicted in the 1965 shooting death of Jimmie Lee Jackson during a civil rights protest, an event that ignited the historic protests in Selma, Ala.
- The governor of Oregon has signed a law that will create "domestic partnerships" for gay and lesbian couples, effective January 1.
