With all the hand-wringing over whether federal healthcare reform will wind up financing abortion with taxpayer money, I'm surprised that President Obama's remarks on the matter haven't gotten more attention. Here's Obama telling Katie Couric last week why the federal government should avoid funding abortion:
I'm pro-choice, but I think we also have the tradition in this town, historically, of not financing abortions as part of government-funded healthcare. My main focus is making sure that people have options of high-quality care at the lowest possible price.
Why haven't abortion-rights groups expressed chagrin? Why aren't antiabortion-rights groups brandishing Obama's words as they pressure Congress to ban federally funded abortion as part of healthcare reform? And where are the "common ground" groups that you'd think would be latching onto the remarks to argue that the prospect of federally funded abortions is a red herring?
