Bill Donohue: Bishops Speaking Out About Obama Unprecedented

I'm getting E-mails from liberal and conservative Roman Catholics echoing my dubiousness toward the theory that the silent majority of U.S. Catholic bishops are embarrassed by conservative bishops' outspokenness on developments like President Obama's recent Notre Dame address.

Here's a note from conservative Catholic League President Bill Donohue regarding the bishops who piped up about Notre Dame:

The real story here is not that most [bishops] said nothing, it's about the 80 or so who spoke out. In my 16 years in this job, I have never seen that many bishops go public about an issue like this. In any event, from my perspective, we have more bishops willing to speak out now on matters that conservative Catholics want them to address than we've seen in a very, very long time. The '60s was a decade in transition, the '70s and '80s were ruled by liberal bishops, the '90s was a decade in transition, and now it's the conservative bishops who are leading the flock.

While I understand that Bill Donohue has to do something to justify his 6 figure paycheck, trying to spin the 80 conservative anti-Obama bishops as "leading the flock" is quite fanciful to say the least. Back in the reality based world, Donohue and his single-issue political cohorts were badly defeated in the 06 mid-terms, wiped out last November and unable to prevent the dreaded "proabort" Obama from receiving an honorary degree at Notre Dame despite numerous public tantrums. As if that wasn't bad enough, they couldn't get Fr. Jenkins fired and now even the Vatican's newspaper is hinting that it's time to stfu. Thanks, conservative bishops. Like Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job!

The "real" story is that most Bishops said nothing (about Obama speaking at Notre Dame) BECAUSE they literally do not give a darn about such things. Hearing (again) from one of the vocal conservatives does not change that reality.
