There is nothing more immoral or insane than diplomatic relations between a democracy and a religion.

The Ambassador represents the people of the United States not the American Catholic Church. Of course, the elected President should pick who he wants. Haven't you ever heard of separation of Church and State - relations with the political entity of the Vatican is not just a matter of concern to Catholics.

Dr Levy of SC 11:11AM May 05, 2009

In other words, Dr. Levy, you want the next ambassador to be a total Obama stooge, rather than sticking to any Catholic beliefs. Nice.

Typical hysteria, question anything about the Pope and you get bashed by his fan club. The Holy See in fact is not a religion but a political entity which is why the US sends an Ambassador to the Holy See in the first place. The Holy See is against condoms, family planning, the death penalty and equal rights for women. It runs a crooked bank, the Vatican Bank, supports illegal immigration and covers up sexual abuse of children. It also does a lot of good things.

Now why would it be in the national to interest to appoint a complacent Ambassador who would be afraid of excommunication if he or she had the temerity to tell his Holiness that abortion should be legal in the United States or condoms do not cause AIDS?

Dr. Levy of SC 2:15PM May 04, 2009

Anti Catholics on a leftist paper's website...I'm shocked!

Dr. Levy why do you go around spouting anti Catholicism on every article about Catholics?

There wouldn't be other Christians if it weren't for the entity that became the Vatican you fool! Do you know anything about the development of your society or are you one of these secular "intellectuals" who know everything about everything except history before atheist philosophers and rampant self indulgence got popular?

Jacob of CA 2:55AM May 04, 2009

Well, maybe. Who's counting? And if we're counting, how many more Christians and Jews and Muslims and Eskimoes has the Church helped? The Church is imperfect, because the Church is made up of humans who are sinful...but, the Church strives for perfection. It's what we are called to do. And we will fall. If we cannot accept failure in others, if we cannot accept failure in ourselves then we will be unhappy people. Read St. Paul or St. Augustine or St. Thomas Aquinas; they knew about imperfection....and forgiveness.

Why do you assume I am not a Christian? Christians not Jews have been the larger number of victims of the Holy See. The Vatican seeks not truth but self preservation.

Dr. Levy of SC 8:44PM May 02, 2009

Why isn't Bill Maher on the list of candidates?

J.H. Cochrane of DE 2:05PM May 02, 2009

If the United States Government is not free to appoint its own ambassador, why not ask the Vatican authorities to choose the ambassador?

I cannot imagine the Chinese or the Israelis having the same problem.

Francis Pimentel-Pinto 10:51AM May 02, 2009

To deliberately cast the Vatican as an enemy of anything except evil shows only extreme prejudice and hatred. Try thinking without bitterness, asking God for enlightment before you put out this venom about a Church searching always for truth. Just because you don't believe in Christ doesn't mean you have to hate His church. Condoms cause AIDS, indeed! Can your really believe any of what you wrote?
