Poll: Most Evangelicals and Catholics Condone Torture in Some Instances

Since they believe their god is going to torture unbelievers for all eternity in hell, why would anyone be surprised they accept it here on earth?

What question was asked and how was it asked in this poll? Who did they ask? I didn't take this poll. Who are these people who truly believe this statement about thousands of other humans who have dedicated their lives to a Good God and Loving Saviour Jesus Christ and stand against torture? Many Christians are not only tortured but martyred in other countries for their belief which is based on love. When Jesus was asked what is the greatest of commandments He said " to Love the Lord your God.." and the second being love your neighbor as yourself. Search out the thousands of men and women who live around you instead of extremists. They are the ones who feed the hungry, cloth those of the streets. I DARE you to look for those. I'm afraid this trend of hating Christians just because they are Christians will bring torture to them here in America.

I am thankful I am neither "Christian" enough to believe in the morality of torture or "real American" enough to hope that the policies of the leaders of my country fail.

The Romans won! The Romans won! The Romans won!

They actually converted far, far more than the followers of the Way that Jesus started have converted.

The state is our savior--or so we really believe! God cannot be trusted to do the job.

The citizens of our country count far more than those of any other country. The lives and well being of other peoples don't ultimately count for much.

Our lives are important, theirs are expendable.

We pursue peace through violence, rather than Jesus' and Paul's commitment to peace through justice.

We have adopted the Roman values--pursuing wealth, power, luxury, entertainment--rather than the values of Jesus--turn the other cheek, love all your neighbors, care for the "least of the these."

We have adopted not only the Roman values, but also the Roman means to impose our will on captive peoples, turning the leaders of weaker peoples into collaborators with captors. We torture, humiliate, kill those who are uncooperative.

And the best trick of all, is they have convinced us that we should call the guy they executed "Lord" but otherwise act as if what he taught doesn't make a damn bit of difference.

One of Christianity's core teachings is that non-believers will be tortured in Hell for eternity. It is not a surprise that this would translate to a view that people who did terrible things (terrorists) should be tortured.

Google "Torquemada."

15th-century Spanish court documents are replete with complaints against individuals for taking a bath ("so and so was seen to be bathing") indicating that the bather was most likely Muslim (they love fountains, water, cleanliness) and thus an infidel. The mention of water or fountains or bathing was all that was necessary for the accused to come under suspicion.

It would be instructive to have the opinions of avowed Atheists and Agnostics on the subject of torture. I suspect they would be the least approving.

I hate being right. I stopped going to church years ago, because I had enormous differences with the people in attendance when it came to the definitions of "goodness," "kindness" and "love." It was an extremely painful decision for me, and I liked thinking that my experiences were outside the norm. Realizing that they are not is sickening, but reinforces my decision to stay far away from organized religion.

This is quite sad. I am a evangelical and am disgusted by this poll. Torture is never right! That is what freedom and this country are all about.

I'm afraid many in the evangelical community are doing just what I get so mad at others for doing. Blindly following a political leader without thinking for themselves.

Sorry, but some conservative politicians were wrong on this one. Wake up and think for yourselves!

The people who claim to follow Jesus also tend to justify torture? In large polls?

Is this nuts or what? Really. Seriously.

THINK about what this is saying about the outrageously poor ministry that evidently is taking place in your churches.
