It is realy a stupid question, why not just ask are you religious? I am sure the results would have far more saying yes.

Even though we are the sixth least religious percentage wise. We have the highest Atheist population ^_^. Good job the ten least religious states for not being to closed minded!

Well, there clearly aren't any grammar or spelling classes at your school.

Why people in the U.S.A. continue to place so much importance on fairy tales such as religious faith is beyond me.

Today's U.S. version of Christianity is one of the most evil things I've encountered.

The first thing this mind virus does is to remove the believer's ability to reason.

Yes, I'd say that slavery is alive and well today in the form of faith.

It is interesting that with the exception of Utah the most religious states also are among those with the highest murder rates while the least religious states generally have lower murder rates. I guess all those religious people can't be bothered with the sixth commandment.

Of course Obama states that he is religious. What candidate for President can claim otherwise? He would never be elected. Theoretically there is no religious test for public office in this nation (except in Mississippi) but in practice there is. Unlike Chile, for example, where a female agnostic was elected President, a non-believer in mythology in our "secular" is unlikely to be elected to a national office.

No love here for people who hold "religion" as something important. Christianity has nothing to do with Christ, and if you follow the church you're going to hell. You only need to do a miniscule amount of research to see how horrible, hypocritical, unchrist-like, and downright evil the churches are. Find god for yourself, not through some fallacy-ridden system invented by man.

God bless New England. I can only pray that one day we will not be slaves to the rest of this country filled with ignorant sinners run by the satanic catholic & protestant churches.

I don't think the numbers are that significant - I would be worried if the Vt, NH, ME and MA were at 10-20%, but they are almost at 50/50.

The top 10 ends at 74% which is only 19% from the CT at 55% - the #10 in the bottom.

I am surprised the top and bottom are so close.

The Pollsters and Politicians will try to make a big thing about this.

And folks like Moon will try to drag down folks who are religious by saying they are uneducated.

I think our new Prez made it quite clear that he IS religious - are you saying something about him? He only graduated from Harvard and married a Princeton grad. Where did you grad from Moon of FL?

SIgned - Religious in Maine

Polls and surveys aren't scientific and don't reflect specific cases, but they do demonstrate basic trends. My guess is that there are more variables besides education as to why certain states are more religious than others. I've spent exactly 6 1/2 years in public school and 6 1/2 years in private Catholic prep schools and have definately read the Bible. It is complex, but the intellectual stimulation happens when you look at it as a historical document and consider the social and political climate in which it was written and by whom. I understand that faith is an emotional thing but an intellectual curiosity and a search for truth shouldn't offend.
