F22 TOXIC CHEMICAL EXPOSURE AND STEALTH FRAUD

OFENS of OK 10:19PM June 09, 2012

The F-22 has been flying since 1997, and operational since 2005. It has been deployed globally many times to Japan, Dubai, Guam, Hawaii and Alaska, etc. It has flown top cover for New York City terror alert. It has scored incredibly well in war game exercises, as far away as Indonesia, against a lot of good foreign equipment. Potential adversaries fear it, and are building their equivalent counter weapons. It is not a defective product. It has unquestionably met the vision of the people who conceived the specification during the late ‘70s. Unfortunately, perfection cannot be claimed, but the remaining operational problems can and must be dealt with. Even the “60 minutes” pilots laud its capability to sweep the skies of our enemies in the 21st century.

When things don’t make sense, look for the sinister. A stealth organization is gunning for the stealth fighter. Why? It could be that they want the money set aside for the F-22 modernization and operations. It could be the result of settling old scores in the Pentagon and Capitol Hill. It could be that self interested groups are trying to keep an old production line open by making F-18s look better by comparison. However, the best explanation is that the F-22 is set to be an election issue, and its reputation must be preemptively destroyed. Who benefits from it? The “60 minutes” pilots are getting something in return. These gentlemen did not blow any whistles until they had ironclad armor protection from the media and Congress. Are all military pilots that well connected?

Military and government officials that have access know that the F-22 aircraft systems are performing to their specifications, and when they malfunction, annunciators and back-up systems are in-place to aid typical emergencies. No unusual substances have been measured in anything but trace or tolerable levels. None of the health issues mentioned by the “60 minutes” pilots are unknown to pilots of other fighter types. Military fighter pilots are similar to professional athletes, and acquire occupational maladies induced by repetitive physical abuse. Some incidents that look like hypoxia in the F-22 are still unexplained, because some circumstantial data does not fit. There are so few in that category that they all may have different causes. There are many medical theories about potential causes, but it will take serious experimentation to prove them. The take away story is that the F-22 does not have different issues than other fighter planes in inventory. It has more reported incidents, especially during this time of heightened awareness. However, it should be expected that an aircraft with incremental performance improvements would be incrementally harder on the crew, producing more frequent and worse health issues. Certainly, we should address the medical issue further, but why is it misrepresented in a national news campaign?

Do not be distracted by the side show caused by the Alaska crash. The oxygen generator turned itself off in response to automatic warnings of leaking hot air inside the jet. There are set procedures for such an occurrence. The accident report does not “blame the pilot”. It makes a difficult judgment that even the best of the best can be distracted from the proper procedures. In this case the delay was 10-15 seconds in an emergency situation lasting a total of 67 seconds. It may be an arguable conclusion, but a committee of qualified people said the facts support it. I suggest everyone read it for themselves. The cold weather gloves and night vision goggles the pilot was wearing did not help the survival struggle. Media reports about the emergency oxygen activation “ring” design being defective are also deliberately misleading. It is the same design, in the same place, as in all USAF jets of all types. If it is ergonomically dangerous, then we should ground the whole USAF.

As usual, Mr. Wheeler brings nothing of substance to any discussion about military aircraft, and depends on the bias and prejudice of his readers to avoid critical examination of his own motivation. May I provide a balancing view? In the past two weeks, I read the signs of an undeserved smear campaign on what is unquestionably a necessary and useful instrument of national power. The media blitz has all the elements. The recent whistleblower pilot’s show on “60 minutes” is the equivalent of the kiss and tell TV interviews that are so successful against political candidates. It followed several days of battlefield preparation coverage of claims from grieving (since November 2010) family that the Air Force blamed an F-22 pilot for an aircraft malfunction. The four month safety stand down of F-22 operations last year for “oxygen issues” was mentioned at every opportunity, as well as the staggering sunk costs of the F-22 program. Follow-up stories have kept up for a week. The non sequitur argument that the F-22 was not used in the War on Terror is prominent, although irrelevant. The litany of media outlets said the same things at the same time, i.e. AP, ABC, CBS, NBC, Bloomberg, Reuters, NY Times, Washington Post, LA Times. All this was timed to coincide with a successful operational deployment to intimidate Iran; and the ceremony delivering the last F-22 which encouraged all the well wishers. The pre-planned smear was unleashed, negating any F-22 goodwill. SECDEF Panetta has also weighed in on his scheduled day with a public directive to modify the jet’s emergency oxygen system activation. The fingerprints of a national campaign are on the relentless F-22 criticism. I can only speculate what group is responsible, because nothing is as it seems. The fact that Lockheed is not providing any defense for the F-22 is somewhat telling, since they are in cost/schedule/performance trouble on the F-35. It would be unwise to defend the dead F-22 program and risk offending the smear machine. The F-35 is the future of the company, after all. For some reason, a powerful entity does not want the cessation of F-22 production to be an issue in the election.

And when the planes start crashing, the investigation board will call it "pilot error."
