Poll Shows Florida Voters Warming to Obama

May 10, 2012 RSS Feed Print

President Obama has bolstered his standing with voters in a key swing state against Republican rival Mitt Romney, according to a recent poll.

Obama leads Romney 46 percent to 45 percent, according to a Suffolk University-WSVN-Miami poll released Wednesday.

That's a change from a similar poll taken in January that had Romney with a five-point lead in the state. The latest poll, which surveyed 600 registered voters between May 6-8, shows 7 percent of voters undecided. The current spread between the Democrat and Republican is also well within the poll's 4 point margin of error.

David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Polling Research Center, said Romney has suffered from the prolonged Republican nomination battle.

"Despite locking up the Republican nomination and a strong showing in the Florida Republican primary in January, Romney still has a lot of work to do to win over Florida voters," he said in a statement released with the survey findings. "He would need to repair the fallout of negativity from the Republican primaries by being more likable and offering general-election voters a positive alternative to President Obama."

Despite 60 percent of respondents saying the country is on the 'wrong track,' the poll actually showed improvement in the number of people who believed that it is on the 'right track,' another factor helping Obama.

"This positive movement on perceptions about the direction of the country over two consecutive polls is solid evidence that things are looking better to those who weren't sure in the last poll," Paleologos said. "An acceleration of this number is the trajectory that Obama could ride to reelection as people tie the economy to his incumbency in a positive way."

The silver lining in the numbers for Romney is a finding that in a tight contest, he may be able to swing things his way by choosing the right vice presidential candidate. Two Floridians often floated as possibilities, Sen. Marco Rubio and former Gov. Jeb Bush, buoys his support. Choosing Bush puts Romney ahead of Obama by 2 points and a Rubio pick makes Romney's lead 3 points.

"A small percentage of Obama voters would leave the Democratic ticket to follow Rubio, tipping the scales to the GOP," said Paleologos. "In a contest likely decided by 1 or 2 points, Rubio's ballot presence could be the key to Florida's electoral votes."

As someone close tothe healthcare industry, I can reassure you that this new healthcare law is already significantly limiting services to everyone, including seniors. Doctor office visits through medicare are receiving but a fraction per office visit, resulting in offices remining open only 2 or 3 times a week, sometimes once a week, while they attempt to find other means of income. Also, Medicare is putting doctors up against the wall when they refer patients to a specialist (i.e. cardiologist). They simply do not want to pay for it. This is not the way it was before. People need to open their eyes and begin to see what a Socialised healthcare system has to offer and this is just the beginning.

Followu-up blood tests and scans for former cancer patients are also being limited.

Romney has my vote.

Though he's not perfect (if he were he'd be the 2nd coming) Obama's done a darn good job in some of the most difficult yrs this nation's seen.

He doesn't toot his own horn, refuses 2 retort 2 those calling him names or claim he's not a 'real' American (proves how little's taught about US gov't in school. His MOM was a US citizen born in Kansas: he could've been born on the moon & still been a US citizen! Or, he's not a 'real' Christian.. but I've never seen anyone turn the other cheek & refuse to be provoked into name-calling or anger. Yet few mention this 1st Family has daily prayer & Bible reading w/ministers & Sunday Christian church services.

Obama set the goal of getting us out of GWB' illegal war in Iraq + got binLaden in 2 yrs(which GWB never even attempted. 2 busy running up a $2T deficit invading a country he KNEW had NO WMDs: lying to Congress, other nations & US so he could invade. 16/19 9-11 terrorists were SAUDIs (& binLaden) so why not go after THEM? Maybe it was that GWB owed Saudi sheiks over $2B after they bailed him out when he bankrupted 2 oil co's?

Ask US auto workers about Obama! In Ohio we stood to lose over a 3/4 million jobs but his bailout (which came w\LOTS of strings attached, & has been paid back 100% w/interest ) but the US auto industry is roaring & back on top again! Cars r now getting TWICE the mpg of 4 yrs ago! Who could've expected 44mpg from a luxury sedan like the Sonata built in the USA by UNION labor in '08? Mitt? Til 4 days ago he said "I'dve let'm go bankrupt!"

Obama's bailout was unlike Bush's TARP of Wall St which, again lying to Congress & US about the need for speed went straight into the wallets of the CEOs & boards of directors who tanked our economy, cheated homeowners, caused our homes to lose up to 50% of their value, jacked our credit card interest rates to 35% (some old cons are still in jail serving loan sharking sentences for less!) & now REFUSE to grant credit to anyone: locking up the economy trying to get Obama OUT b4 he can reinstitute the rules which kept super-banks from forming, made them put out honest reports, banned them from dishonest or trick loans etc.

Why do you think the US Chamber of Commerce (which's strictly on the 1%'ers side) is trying so hard 2 unseat Obama?

He's trying 2 get healthcare for ALL Americans. As an RN I KNOW we're now 48th of 50 in quality of care 4 our citizens. 13 US states qualify as 3rd world countries 4 infant & maternal mortality rates. US healthcare's worse than Poland or Cuba's!

3 major insurers'll PAY u 2 go to Canada, Spain, France etc 2 have heart surgery or hips replaced instead of staying here d/t the massive overcharging by private insurers where 48-56 cents/dollar goes 4'overhead' vs. Medicare's 6.2 cents!

Docs USED 2b able 2 treat patients w/o playing mother-may-I. Now some HS kid tells 'em if they can do surgery, give a med, or treat a cancer!

The cost of uninsured's 4x what insuring them costs - but anti-Obama's lie about that 2

My President definitely has my vote....I will strongly encourage others to study and support his strong efforts and accomplishments as our President. Despite being ridiculed at every move by the harsh Republican Party and those who doubt him, he will prevail. He has my prayers. He is not God but only a man.
