If Mitt Romney wins the Illinois Republican presidential primary as expected Tuesday, he can attribute his victory to a massive barrage of television advertising that overwhelmed his opponents.
Romney and his allied political action committee have outspent his closest rival, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, by 7-to-1 in Illinois, according to a survey by Politico. Just as important, they outspent Santorum by 21-to1 in the crucial Chicago media market. The overwhelming majority of that money went to TV ads, largely negative commercials against Santorum.
All told, Romney's campaign spent more than $1.1 million in Illinois and Restore Our Future PAC, which supports Romney, spent more than $2.5 million.
The Santorum campaign spent about $220,000 and the pro-Santorum Red, White and Blue Fund spent $312,000.
