Twinkies in Trouble: Hostess Filing for Bankruptcy

Back to blog

Blaming Hostess going out of business on Michelle Obama has got to be the dumbest and most amoral comment I've ever heard.

So what you're saying is....We should strive to keep Tobacco companies targeting children because it'll keep people working in the tobacco industry employed.

Gee and people don't think that obesity in children is a problem???

STEVCHIPMUNK,

You bet your rear-end people are being taken to task over their bigoted and ignorant comments. Frankly, sir, you belong at the head of the line for your phony indignation. Like most of the ignorant comments posted on here (and other comment sections through out the internet) camouflaged by a false name, your posting cannot conceal your deep seeded contempt for the First Lady (and presumably for the President) based on bigotry. My posting was about attitudes regarding the First Lady are SPOT ON, but your racial attitudes have blinded you to it- just as it has the other supposed "upstanding" citizens.

There is absolutely NOTHING objectionable about the First Lady promoting health lifestyle habits by encouraging children to eat healthier and exercise. Many First Ladies have initiated similar programs seeking the promotion of healthy habits, but ONLY NOW is the First Lady supposedly "imposing her values" on children. HER VALUES? If her valued include promoting healthy habits in children, then who, might I ask, would EVER object to their children embracing those values?

Those "values" are ones everyone should be able to embrace. Of course, ignorant and bigoted people who choose to see the color of her skin instead of the inherent quality of the health promoting initiative cannot accept a message from an African American woman they normally would totally embrace. I am guessing if Sarah Palin were to propose same ideas, which she has done, you would either commend her or say nothing at all.

Alas, STEVCHIPMUNK, have no fear, you are not alone in your stupidity. "mrs obama does not represent the united states.........i do...........thank you....", proudly boasts DAVID HUMPHREY.

Let's be clear about this: an intelligent woman promoting the idea of children eating healthy and getting more exercise DOES NOT represent the United States, but a person rejecting those admirable qualities because they are blinded by hate and bigotry does? After reading most of these comments, perhaps David Humphrey does represent America's attitudes, just not in the way he's thinks he does.

DISGRACEFUL.

I wonder who this publication is endorsing for President.

Yes go ahead and blame Hostess's problems on the Obama's. Like they made them spend money they did not have. When are the people going to give them some rest and start looking at America's problems and looking for ways to fix them. I for one agree with Mrs. Obama, sweet vending machines do not belong in schools. The children should eat healthy food and get plenty of play time.

As someone who has lost over 200 pounds ( yeah the old fashioned way- not surgery) I don't see the harm in having a Twinkie or a HO HO every so often. NOT a box of them but I have a box of Twinkies and a box of Ding Dongs in the kitchen right now. If anything is to blame for Americans being overweight I would say its our jobs. Most Americans go to cubical everyday and yeah we talk about going to the gym but honestly who has the time (or money) to go. A lot of us are single parents, who just can't go to a gym. The way I lost my weight was losing my job. I have 2 part time jobs that are NOT in the cubical, I'm up walking not sitting and eating and I am not so depressed like I was with the corportate job I had. I think ol Michelle needs to look in the mirror and get some help for HER shopping addiction and stop throwing stones.

I am just amazed--Amazed, hear?--that there are so many comments castigating those upstanding citizens who object to Mrs. Obama trying to impose her values--Her Values!--on America.

I mean, if Americans want to eat Hostess Twinkies (for example, coated with thick batter and then deep fried to a crisp golden brown on the outside with a soft lucious creamy center on the inside), then it should be the God Given Right of Americans to do so without Big Brother or Big Mama interference from the White House... don'cha think?

Now, of course, there is a place for Guvment Control -- certainly not guns, of course, but in things like immoral (and disgusting!) sex acts committed in the hidden dark recesses of people's homes. Or women who claim to believe that they have the right over their own bodies, a claim they spuriously assert is higher than the Will of the People or Congress to assert control over these matters.

But in the matter of the right of Americans to get big fat butts, the government should just butt out.

Really? You're actually trying to lay this at the First Lady's feet because she is encouraging healthier eating and more physical activity in children?

The author needs to find an appreciation and greater respect for PERSPECTIVE before writing columns like this for the sake of filling space best left blank in light of these words. Michelle Obama is FAR from being a trendsetter in First Ladies of the White House trying to initiate programs to promote the health of our nations children. Mrs. Obama is simply the latest in a trend of First Ladies taking an active, albeit motherly, role in promoting healthy habits.

Unfortunately, our current First Lady has had to endure public personal attacks about her figure and health initiative, unlike former a vast majority First Ladies. As our nations first African American First Lady, Mrs. Obama had to deal with remarks brimming with racial overtones by those playing to the ignorant with commentary aimed at African American female stereotypes including large posteriors and racialized diets.

This bogus and thinly veiled "analysis" of Hostess' financial trouble is just another in a long line of commentary unfairly taking potshots at our First lady in a blatant attempt to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
