TR was right in believing that the federal government should advocate for the people. Why that was, or remains, a radical notion, is beyond comprehension. While he advocated against large corporations (he would oppose and speak out against Multinationals today who don't see themselves as "American" companies anymore) he believed in free enterprise, competition, and self-reliance. A party based on these values would sweep Obama from office rather handily.

would be cool to have a "tag" or link in the article to the bull moose party: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_Party_(United_States,_1912)

funny that there used to be a "progressive" party that stemmed from the republicans.

Arguably among our 3 or 4 greatest Presidents, Teddy Roosevelt would be considered so shockingly far left that today he wouldn't even get a hearing at an Occupy Wall Street protest, let alone in the corridors of power.

Sad indeed that the values for which he stood - fairness, stewardship, and self-reliance - have been completely abandoned today, except where they have been utterly inverted.

If ever there were a man to resurrect, it's TR.

There still are some Bull Moose Republicans out there......some of them even are tea party types. Maybe Obama will split the republican base with a true progressive message.

The author fails to acknowledge that the biggest hurdle to Roosevelt's election in 1912 was that he was running against both Taft (as the Republican nominee) and Wilson (as the Democratic nominee). The splitting of the Republican base was instrumental in Wilson's election
