Keep Hope Alive: GOP Candidates Refuse to Give Up

November 14, 2011 RSS Feed Print

Whether it's because of admirable perseverance or sheer stubbornness, the current batch of Republican presidential candidates never say die. Not even a feeding frenzy of epic proportions can drive them out of the race, as we've seen in the past week with Rick Perry and Herman Cain. What might have been natural exit points for politicians in the past--developments that were unsettling, embarrassing, or worse--have had little or no effect.

[Check out our editorial cartoons on the GOP.]

There has been one major dropout: Former Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota withdrew in August after his campaign failed to catch fire. And former Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska and Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey considered running but decided not to.

But the field has remained full despite setbacks for one candidate after another and all are still competing in the key early-voting states including Iowa, South Carolina, and Florida. Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman addressed the exit issue Sunday on "Face the Nation" when he said, "The political junkies [are] all saying, 'You know, how come this thing hasn't solidified? But I think for the most part, people are just beginning to tune in. And that's why I like our chances."

Political professionals say that what actually drives people to quit includes a severe lack of money and a lack of delegates once the actual voting begins. The early states don't hold their caucuses and primaries until January, Another reason for staying in the race this time around is that the candidates can continue to receive free publicity by participating in debates such as Saturday's forum in South Carolina. The event didn't generate much news but it did keep keep the presidential wannabes in the public eye. In addition, many of their core supporters encourage them through thick and thin, as is happening with Cain and Perry. Still another reason is that they believe staying in the race will get them more notoreity and the likelihood of bigger speaking fees, book contracts, and television gigs in the future. And there is the desire to maintain the excitement of the campaign as long as possible.

[Vote now: Who is your pick for the 2012 GOP nomination?]

Perhaps all this goes back to Bill Clinton, who endured humiliation amid accusations of sexual improprieties (some of which turned out to be true) both when he was a candidate and when he was in the White House. But Clinton never gave up or gave in.

Rick Perry seems to be on the same path, for entirely different reasons. The Texas governor endured public humiliation during last week's Republican presidential debate in Michigan when he couldn't remember one of the three federal departments that he has promised to abolish--the Energy Department--raising questions about his intelligence, his ability to handle pressure, and whether he understands the positions he is taking or only recites talking points given to him by his staff.

The day after his gaffe, Perry was in good humor and back on the campaign trail. He gave several TV interviews, saying the flub showed that he is "like most Americans" and forgets things, not that he is incapable of being commander in chief. Perry showed grit and people like that. It's unlikely that he will be the Republican nominee but his handling of the episode demonstrated perseverance and fortitude.

Another candidate who has showed determination is businessman Herman Cain. Accused of sexual harassment or sexual misbehavior by at least four women, he has denied any impropriety and pursued his campaign with vigor. He is still in the top tier of Republican preference in opinion polls.

And former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is now showing some life in the polls after a miserable start to his campaign which featured the departure of key staffers who were disppointed in his performance. There were also embarrassing stories about his and his wife's profligate spending habits.

Finally, there are the other candidates who are still campaigning despite lagging in opinion surveys as they chase former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, generally regarded as the front runner. They include Reps. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and Ron Paul of Texas, former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, and former Govs. Huntsman and Gary Johnson of New Mexico. It may not be realistic, but their staying in the race is a testament to the power of hope, misplaced though it may be.

A regular pack of keystone cops these Republican candidates are. Have you ever seen so much nonsense in your life?

Bachmann who has no chance is now telling us that we should be strip all regulations more like communist China (so Americans can be reduced to Chinese wage levels - essentially slaves). Thanks but no thanks.

How about the pathological liar Newt. Newt was a lobbyist for Freddy Mac and goes around condemning Freddie Mac (probably cuz they have to have been fools to listen to anything Newt every said).

Of course Willard is upfront about being dishonest about everything and only promises to represent the richest of the rich, his peers.

Then the most absurd of all is Cain. As a lobbyist, and employee of the Kochs, and former Federal reserve banker, Cain is the ultimate insider. Cain is promoting the new reality that we should be election no-nothing lobbyists and eliminate the politician middlemen. On top of that it seems like Cain wants to 'Sandusky' any women employees to prove his machisimo that he would screw half the country without blinking.

Despite Herman Cain’s having far more managerial experience than any President in American history, the media—which has used hearsay, gossip and gutter politics to slime him--is now beating the “Libya drum” in order to equate his intellect with Sarah Pain’s.

In two short weeks, the media has become the mouthpiece of America’s corrupt elite and the Democratic Plantation who don’t want a conservative Black CEO’s vision for America.

Having crossed every ethical line, the media is acting like a pack of racists who fear that they might “get stuck with” a second ethnic minority as President.

America’s corrupt elite don’t want Cain who has said that the first thing that he’ll do when he’s in office is find out where all of the stimulus money went. They fear Cain who knows how to balance a budget and make government smaller, more efficient and accountable so that money can’t just disappear.

America’s corrupt elite don’t want Cain’s flat-tax plan because it will de-corrupt” Congress by preventing them from creating tax loopholes and write-offs for their good buddies. His plan will make all taxes visible and easily monitored and controlled by voters, so that Congress can’t “sneak-add” taxes to goods and services. His plan will lower the cost of goods and makes them competitive, because it’s a "tax-once only" system rather than the current system that taxes goods multiple times from production to the marketplace.

Everyone who has taken the time to get to know Cain knows that he is smart, well-read, cares deeply about America and her future, and understands—as does former U.S. Comptroller General David Walker—that America is hurling towards economic destruction, and we have little time left to turn our economy around.

I personally don't care whether Cain knows where Libya is--as long as he supports his generals whose job it is to protect America—unlike President Obama who has fired generals who disagreed with him.

I care that Cain understands that America’s economic strength is as critical as her military mite.

I care that Cain is the only presidential candidate who has a plan that will create 12 million jobs, revive our economy and make us competitive in the world again (cf. analysis by CNN anchor Erin Burnett’s OutFront economic strike force team, Oct. 2011).

I care that Cain believes in peace through strength, in knowing who our enemies and our friends are, and in helping our friends and not helping our enemies. Unlike President Obama, Cain won’t throw Israel under the bus. I care about that, too.

Unfortunately, too many Americans care about gossip, hearsay, gutter politics and one’s ethnicity and political affiliation—rather than what a person stands for and the person’s record of accomplishments.

I pray that Americans will join Cain in his fight to save our economy and to rid America of its Culture of Corruption. Otherwise, it won’t be much longer before we won’t have a Herman Cain or even a country called America to kick around.

We don't want any of you lying sacks o sh*t.

Republican Democrat GoodCop Bad Cop

None serve our interests, and all of them have taken an OATH do to so.

The average Republican helped put the Dems back in under Bush to bring our Troops home. Something they swore to do. Did you forget already ?

Where are they ? Not Home.

Pelosi showed on the first day with her snot nosed grandkids. Presumibly showing them where she will be selling out America for insider trading tips.

Which profession is it that allows employees to show up the first day and do nothing ?

America we have put it off long enough. They told us repeatedly it wasn't time. But I tell you now is the time.

Time to play the Blame Game...with a capital T for Treason & Traitor. Most are sitting at home anyhow, why not ?

We should start with lists of those who took oaths to the constitution and the people first, including law enforcement.

Since our courts no longer work for us, and the need to try Judges and Prosecutors will be neccessary. A Tribunal Court must be planned for.

Then any who subverted the government or its regulations thru lobbist or bribes.

Then anyone who misrepresented the facts knowingly or not. No excuses. They asked for and stated they were qualified to be in the position, now they can take responsibility for thier action or inaction. This includes Reporters and thier Bosses.

Then once thier lap dogs are down, we can round up the corporate heads and give them a taste of peoples justice. For all the pain and misery they have intentionally created.

They will try to run and hide on thier islands. And we will send all the Vets they saw fit to send off to the meat grinder for lies and profit to find them and the money.

No longer do you get to steal say the monies are gone and your family gets to live in luxury.

General population prison and monitored poverty is thier due, the same they've offered us.

We don't consider profiting from subverting our government or its constitution success.

That is why you will be punished.
