Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper has arguably the oddest résumé of any big-city leader: He worked as a geologist and was a brew-pub owner and had never held public office before he was elected mayor in 2003. He's now running for governor of Colorado.
As mayor, Hickenlooper has become a leader in developing practical solutions for saving energy, improving urban transit, and even reducing greenhouse gas emissions. He gets liberals and conservatives alike on board for Denver's innovative programs by quoting Abraham Lincoln: Give the people "the real facts, and beer."
