David Gergen: Obama Is a Leader of Enormous Potential, but He Can’t Do It Alone

The comment made my Joseph Michaels has a ring of truth.Unfortunately there are too many executives that have gone beyond greed ( for a lack of a better term) that recovery won't happen anytime soon. No human being is capable of fixing all the problems we have and see today not only in the US but around the world. Only Divine Intervention will accomplish what most humans earnestly desire; peace, justice, security, prosperity, which will result in our happiness.

David,

You are THE BEST!!

It has been a such privilege istening to your comments during the campain and now. I have found you to be very honest, fair and so wise beyond your years. Honestly, you are the reason I start watching CNN because your opinion has been the truth that has helped me make up my mind about who I voted for. I agree with you, PE Obama has great protential, but he can't do it alone that's why I am so impressed with his team of leader is surrounding himself with.

I believe PE Obama can use someone with your expertise and wisdom in his cabinet because you 're always right on. why don't you apply? You said it yourself it will take all of us.

There certainly has been a leadership crisis in the US for the past several years. While the US image abroad is greatly in need of reframing, it will take a strong Geoleader to position the US again as a positive role model for change.

A recent reading of Wibbeke's new book on "Global Business Leadership" shows that US business and political leaders need to be interculturally competent in order to deal with all levels of an organizations, particularly a bureaucratic one. Only time will tell is US leaders from all sectors embrace the Geoleadership model of guiding followers through the global maze of the future.

Dear Mr. Gergen,

I agree with most of what you say. But I strongly disagree with one statement. Americans are not smart enough to realize what is really going on. They only realize the results, the disease in the economy. They do not know the real cause of the disease.

As Obama proceeds to name Geithner as head of Treasury my hopes are quickly faking after the elation of the election win. The real culprits of the economic crisis IS the Federal Reserve. They are the ones who have artificially manufactured this crisis for their own benefit and wealth. It is to their end to increase America's debt to them, a debt that is based on the Fed merely putting ink to paper to lend America billions of dollars. No, TRILLIONS. It is the old Rothschild pattern of establishing a central bank for a country, then reap the rewards every time the country faces an economic problem. Sincer Reagan, our debt has increased to them by $10 Trillion. We are actually paying the interest today for Korea, Vietnam, right to the Gulf Wars. Never a dime of the principal paid. Now Obama is about to put the FED in charge of the Treasury.

All one has to do is analyze Anderson Cooper's expose on the 'Ten Most Wanted', specifically James Cayne of Bear Sterns. In it, Cayne admits to a friend that he knew the policies he was initiating at Bear Stgerns was doomed to failure, but that he was force into those policies by 'financial giants' who wnated him to follow their plan. By the time this is over - which I don't believe it will ever be now - we will have increased our debt to the Fed by about $2-$3 trillion. Just for the paper they have printed it on.

There is a reason that JFK issued Executive Order 11110, an order that reaffirmed the US government's right to print it's own money, borrow from itself, interest free. In essence, JFK realized that the Fed was both unnecessary, and in control of American financial policy. The US government was not. Before his death, JFK was able to infuse over $4 billion into the US economy, without borrowing a dime from the Fed. With his death, the Fed was back in charge.

When you look at the Fed's intricate relationship with oil, the military-industrial complex, and the Rockefeller Empire (which includes Prescott and George Bush) one can begin to understand what is really going on. We lost control of our country long ago. To be specific, on November 22, 1963, for JFK was the last President to overcome the advice of his so called 'advisers', and try to get control of America back.

As much as I like Obama as a person and a leader, as a man, I just do not think he has the wherewithal to overcome the advisers he is choosing. He, just like Reaqgan, is surrounding himself with the true enemy.

David, thanks so much for sharing your extraordinary wisdom and insight via your publications and appearances on CNN's many political shows.

As an American living overseas, I see a culture of "cronyism" that has taken hold of the top level leadership in many major corporations. This has led to a debilitating crisis of competent leadership and consequent financial problems. It is not just with the former Big 3 Autos, but most "Old Economy" product manufacturing companies have veered towards "Style" over "Substance" in selecting their top leaders. Look at the total lack of diversity in top "old economy" corporations - when the comsumers they are dealing with are more non-American than American. They have an "All white, all male, Good Old Boy" culture; even the Republican National Convention had some prominent women - but not these companies. People of color can simply forget it regardless of their leadership capabilities. How can these companies hope to forge new ways with the same old "fat" dogs and strategies that were very successful in the 20th century, but are not going to work in the 21st century with China, India, Brazil and other Eastern European countries coming into the global economic equation.

My simple point is that what is happening with the Big 3 Autos will also happen to most "old economy" manufacturing companies unless "true leadership" based on "merit" and competence" regardless of anything else becomes their dominant culture. Sadly, Capitalism has a way of ensuring that without Substantive Leadership Bankruptcy is the only path to Change!

No more government Handouts for Deliberate, Premeditated Incompetent Corporate Leadership!!!

David, I totally agree with your opinion regarding leadership in our country. I think we need not only strong leaders nationally, but also in our communities. Leadership roles in our communities will build strong families and neighborhoods. I think this is a time for all Americans to come together and quit talking about what is wrong and get to work. I have a lot of faith that President Elect Obama will lead us in the right direction, but I agree he can't do it alone. He will need people in each area of the country to open up their minds to new ideas and to each other. We can't all be leaders. Some have to follow and be supportive and do the hard work. I for the first time in my life, am so ready for change that I am willing to volunter and do things to make a difference in my community.

In my blog "Customer Experience Matters" (http://experiencematters.wordpress.com), I make the case for President-Elect Obama to appoint a Citizen Experience Officer.

One of America's greatest politician Mr. Benjamin Franklin(1706~1790)once said: "Make honesty and sinserity as your life-long partner, and it will help you in time of your need far better than any of your closest friends. Having an honest mind is worth more than reading 100 books." "CHANGE" is to come from Washington, particularly from Washington political leaders.

Taxation and economic policies must be established in consideratons of the middle class Americans. Lower the tax brackets of those people. Give them incentives to earn money and save if they can. The rich must share more tax responsiblities. Eliminate rules to tax senior citizens and minority taxpayers who are struggling from the low income. And restore governement credibility from all American taxpayers. Have US Treasury Secretary to uphold Mr. Benjamin Franklin's honesty first, and all the rest of American taxpayers will follow. "CHANG" . this is the 'CHANGE' we need in America!

Honest and sincerity from the leaders first!

Mr. David Gergen you are always inspiring and thoughtful. I listened to your analysis throughout the campaign and it has always been fair and constructive. One of your best qualities is being able to see the qualities of others. Thank you for seeing and understanding that PE Obama has a difficult job ahead of him. A job of which he knows he will be responsible for the well being and security of every American. I trust that PE Obama will try to select the best political minds he can who love for this country and it's people. You are a remarkable leader in your field and the best political mind on TV!
