More than two and a half years after the recession ended, the prolonged economic downturn still seems interminable. Some U.S. cities, however, are oases of jobs in a nation still ravaged by unemployment.

Of the U.S. metropolitan areas with 200,000 people or more, these are the 10 with the best combination of low and falling unemployment, according to a U.S. News analysis. All of them have unemployment of 5.4 percent or lower (as of November 2011); more than three percentage points below the national rate.
