Though investigators are still waiting for autopsy results, heroin overdose is believed to be the cause of the acclaimed actor’s death, as Hoffman was found Sunday morning in his New York apartment with a syringe still in his arm and with 50 bags of heroin and other drugs. Early tests of the heroin in Hoffman’s apartment found it did not have any traces of fentanyl, the cancer drug linked to dozens of heroin deaths in the North East in recent months.
According to CNN sources, Hoffman had withdrawn $1,200 from a grocery story ATM the day before his death and was seen that evening talking to two men with messenger bags. Hoffman, who was 46 when he died, was known to have struggled with drug addiction. In 2006 he told “60 Minutes” he went to rehab for substance abuse after he graduated from college. Last May, he checked himself into a 10-day detox program after he started abusing prescription pills and snorting heroin.
