Even when winning the night's biggest awards, the members of Daft Punk refused to remove their space helmets to give acceptance speeches at Sunday's 56th annual Grammy Awards. The French duo won for best album for this summer's "Random Access Memories," and best record and best pop duo/group performance for "Get Lucky," which featured pop music super producer Pharrell Williams. "Random Access Memories" nabbed best dance/electronica album as well, which was given out before Sunday's telecast.
Also cleaning up big with four awards was Seattle rap group Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Their win for best new artist kicked off the night's ceremony and followed a pre-telecast sweep in the rap categories for best song, performance and album for their hit single "Thrift Shop" and their debut album "The Heist."
Lorde, a 17-year-old from New Zealand who was notably snubbed out of a best new artist nomination, won for best song along with writing partner Joel Little for "Royals," in one of the biggest surprises of the night. She additionally walked away with a Grammy for best pop solo performance. Newcomer Kacey Musgraves also upset a field of established stars including Taylor Swift and Blake Shelton with her win for best country album for "Same Trailer, Different Park." Her song "Merry Go Round" also won best country song in the pre-telecast.
Among the night's other victors were Bruno Mars for best pop vocal album ("Unorthodox Jukebox"); Jay Z and Justin Timberlake for best rap/sung collaboration ("Holy Grail"); and Dave Grohl, Paul McCartney, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear for best rock song ("Cut Me Some Slack").
The night featured a performances by many of winners including Daft Punk and Pharrell, Lorde, Macklemore and Lewis, and Musgraves, as well as a reunion of the surviving Beatles Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their arrival in America.
