The mall, located about 30 miles north of the nation’s capital, was in lockdown and police were still assessing the situation as of early afternoon.

"We do have 3 confirmed fatalities," said Howard County Executive Ken Ulman.

Various reports on social media said shots were heard near the entrances to Sears and J.C. Penney, which is near the mall’s food court.

Multiple police and fire units from Howard County and surrounding areas were at the scene and nearby roads were cordoned off.

The incident comes at the end of a week where there have been several gun-related incidents, including fatal shootings at Purdue University and South Carolina State University.
