Oscar nominations were announced this morning and "American Hustle" and "Gravity" lead the Oscar tally with 10 animations, followed by "12 Years a Slave" with nine nominations. Other films seeing multiple nominations include "The Wolf of Wall Street," "Dallas Texas Buyers Club," "Philomena" and "Captain Phillips."
The nominations were announced by actor Chris Hemsworth and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
"American Hustle" dominated the acting categories, with the performances of actress Amy Adams, actor Christian Bale, supporting actor Bradley Cooper and supporting actress Jennifer Lawrence being nominated, as was director David O. Russell, who also shares a best original screenplay nomination with Eric Warren Singer. "Gravity" nominations were largely technical, but include nods for the performance of actress Sandra Bullock and the direction of Alfonso Cuarón. Both are competing for best picture with "Captain Phillips," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Her," "Nebraska," "Philomena," "12 Years a Slave" and "Wolf of Wall Street."
"12 Years a Slave" also saw nods for director Steve McQueen, for an adapted screenplay by John Ridley, and for the performances of actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, supporting actress Lupita Nyong'o, and supporting actor Michael Fassbender, as well as in some technical categories.
Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" was expected to do well, and did, claiming five nominations total, for Scorsese's direction, Terence Winter's screenplay and the performances of actor Leonardo DiCaprio and supporting actor Jonah Hill. More surprising is the six nominations awarded the small film "Nebraska," which in addition to a best picture nod, was recognized for the performances by actor Bruce Dern, supporting actress June Squibb, original screenplay by Bob Nelson, director Alexander Payne and for cinematography.
