First it was grocery delivery, then TV series, then Sunday delivery, then drones. Now, Amazon may try to rival warehouse clubs like Costco by offering a bulk shopping service.
USA Today reports that Amazon aims to launch a new service called Pantry in 2014, in which customers will be able to buy items like paper towels, pet food, and some non-perishable grocery items. Shoppers will be able to buy these items in bulk, so long as they fit into certain-sized boxes and do not exceed a maximum weight limit, the paper reports.
Like the company's Sunday delivery partnership with the U.S. Postal Service, announced in November, the service will be available to members of Amazon Prime, a service in which customers get benefits like free expedited shipping for an annual fee of $79. Members-only offerings like these could be ways of enticing more customers to join the service.
The announcement comes after a year marked by new ventures for the company. In addition to the Sunday delivery service, the company launched its AmazonFresh grocery delivery service this week. Founder Jeff Bezos also earlier this month revealed the company was considering drone delivery, and the company recently released its first original series, "Alpha House."
The company is declining to comment on Pantry, according to Amazon spokesman Scott Stanzel.
