The American Civil Liberties Union seems to understand that some people are visual learners. On Wednesday the group released a long-form comic characterizing a "stealth attack" by some Republicans on access to abortion.
Syndicated newspaper cartoonist Jen Sorensen drafted the doodles, which mock state-level laws that limit abortion and favorably recount the "epic filibuster" against one such law by Texas legislator Wendy Davis, now a Democratic candidate for governor.
One cartoon quotes Rep. Steve Stockman, R-Texas, saying , "If babies had guns, they wouldn't be aborted." It's accompanied by one that paraphrases a claim by Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., that women are infrequently impregnated by a rapist. The federal lawmakers are insincerely labeled "high-minded sages."
Another cartoon humorously shows a state regulator inspecting the hallway width, parking access and training standards of an abortion clinic with a clear goal of shutting it down. North Carolina, Ohio, Texas and Wisconsin are among the states that enacted new abortion restrictions this year.
