Even without a massive hit album, Madonna can bring home the bacon.

Earning $125 million from June 2012 to June 2013, Madonna topped Forbes' 2013 list of top-earning celebrities – quite the leap from last year, when she didn't even make the top 20. Though her latest album's performance on the charts was mediocre, the world tour it inspired raked in over $305 million, which certainly padded the pop star's pockets, in addition to her other products and sponsorship deals.

The Forbes highest paid celebrity list includes entertainers, producers, media execs and authors (Forbes plays fast and loose with the term "celebrity"). Steven Spielberg, a regular on the list, nabbed the No. 2 spot; blockbuster movie machines Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer also made the top 10.

"Fifty Shades of Grey" writer E. L. James made her debut on the highest-paid celebrity list with her $95 million in earnings, beating James Patterson, a fellow author and Forbes mainstay. Media personalities Simon Cowell, Howard Stern Glenn Beck, Dr. Phil McGraw and Rush Limbaugh also made the top 20. Meanwhile, Oprah, last year's top-earner, dropped to No. 13 (she still claims the No. 1 position on Forbes's Celebrity 100, which takes into account fame and fortune). Other TV super-producers making the big bucks include Tyler Perry, Dick Wolf and Mark Burnett.

Golfer Tiger Woods and tennis star Roger Federer were the top earning athletes. Lady Gaga, whose career is oft compared to Madonna's, cracked the top 10 with her $80 million (she also tops Forbes' Celebrities Under 30 list). Robert Downey Jr. was the top earning actor with his $75 million, much from his mega hit "Iron Man" franchise, while country star Toby Keith secured the No. 19 spot.
