She is in critical but stable condition at Massachusetts General Hospital, according to the Boston Globe.

"Late Sunday afternoon, Mrs. Teresa Heinz Kerry was taken by ambulance to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, accompanied by her husband," Glen Johnson, a state department spokesman said in a released statement.

"Once doctors had stabilized her condition, she was transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, again accompanied by the secretary."

Heinz Kerry, 74, was married to former Pennsylvania Sen. John Heinz until 1991 when he died in a helicopter crash, making her the Heinz company heiress. She is known for her philanthropy, particularly on environmental and health care issues, and her candidness on the campaign trail in 2004 when Kerry, a Democrat and former Massachusetts senator, ran for president.

Heinz Kerry was born in Mozambique and is fluent in five languages, according to the Globe.

Citing someone informed about the event, The New York Times reported she suffered "a seizure of some kind" before getting rushed to the Nantucket hospital.

Kerry and his wife were vacationing on Nantucket for the 4th of July holiday, after Kerry had recently returned from an overseas trip that included a stop in India. He received criticism after the State Department denied he was on his 76-foot yacht Wednesday, as Egypt slipped into political turmoil following a military coup. A spokeswoman later admitted he had been on board the vessel but only briefly and reiterated he was actively in communication with U.S. and Egyptian officials throughout the crises.
